1. An apparatus of a station (STA) configurable for wireless local area network (WLAN) communication in a channel that is configurable to support communication by incumbent devices, wherein the communication by the incumbent devices is prioritized over the WLAN communication, wherein the channel comprises a plurality of resource units (RUs), each RU comprising a contiguous plurality of resource elements (REs), wherein the apparatus comprises:
- memory; and
processing circuitry, configured to;
determine a portion of the channel occupied by an incumbent device;
refrain from communication in a first subset of RUs that overlap the portion of the channel occupied by the incumbent device;
determine a combined RU that comprises two or more RUs of a second subset of RUs that do not overlap the portion of the channel occupied by the incumbent device; and
encode a physical layer convergence procedure protocol data unit (PPDU) for transmission in the combined RU,wherein the PPDU is encoded in accordance with joint coding across the RUs of the combined RU.

Embodiments of an access point (AP), station (STA) and method of communication are generally described herein. The STA may determine a portion of a channel occupied by an incumbent device. The STA may refrain from communication in a first subset of resource units (RUs) that overlap the portion of the channel occupied by the incumbent device. The STA may determine a combined RU that comprises two or more RUs of a second subset of RUs that do not overlap the portion of the channel occupied by the incumbent device. The STA may encode a physical layer convergence procedure protocol data unit (PPDU) for transmission in the combined RU. The PPDU may be encoded in accordance with joint coding across the RUs of the combined RU.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of a station (STA) that stores instructions for execution of operations by processing circuitry, wherein the STA is configurable for wireless local area network (WLAN) communication in a channel that is configurable to support communication by incumbent devices, wherein the communication by the incumbent devices is prioritized over the WLAN communication, wherein the channel comprises a plurality of resource units (RUs), each RU comprising a contiguous plurality of resource elements (REs), wherein the operations configure the processing circuitry to:

determine a portion of the channel occupied by an incumbent device; refrain from communication in a first subset of RUs that overlap the portion of the channel occupied by the incumbent device; determine a second subset of RUs that do not overlap the portion of the channel occupied by the incumbent device; and encode one or more codewords (CWs) for transmission in the RUs of the second subset, wherein the CWs are encoded in accordance with independent coding for each of the RUs of the second subset. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13)

14. An apparatus of a station (STA), wherein the apparatus comprises:
- memory; and
processing circuitry, configured to;encode a physical layer convergence procedure protocol data unit (PPDU) for transmission in a non-contiguous resource unit (RU) comprising two or more segments of resource elements (REs), wherein the REs of each segment are spaced uniformly in frequency by a predetermined spacing, wherein the segments of REs are disjoint in frequency, wherein to encode the PPDU, the processing circuitry is further configured to; for a plurality of spatial streams, distribute bits of the spatial streams to different segments; for each of the segments; determine modulated symbols based on the bits of the segment; and interleave the modulated symbols. - View Dependent Claims (15)
