THE METHOD OF MAKING A SPONGE MATERIAL HAVING INTERCONNECTION PORES WHICH COMPRISES FORMING A SUBSTANTIALLY STABLE DISPERSION OF BUBBLES IN AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION COMPRISING AN ACID IN WHICH THE ACID FUNCTIONAL GROUP IS INORGANIC AND HAVING A DISSOCIATION CONSTANT OF AT LEAST 10-2, A MEMBER OF THE CLASS CONSISTING OF A WATERSOLUBLE HYDROLYZED COPOLYMER OF ALLYIDENE DIETHOXIDE AND VINYL ACETATE, A MIXTURE OF SAID COPOLYMER AND POLYVINYL ALCOHOL, A WATER-SOLUBLE HYDROLYZED COPOLYMER OF ALLYLIDENE DIACETATE AND VINYL ACETATE, A MIXTURE OF SAID COPOLYMER AND POLYVINYL ALCOHOL, EACH OF SAID COPOLYMERS CONTAINING UP TO 15 MOL PERCENT OF THE ALLYLIDENE COMPOUND, AND A MIXTURE OF A DIALDEHYDE AND POLYVINYL ALCOHOL CONTAINING UP TO 15 MOL PERCENT OF SAID DIALDEHYDE, SAID POLYVINYL ALCOHOL CONTAINING LESS THAN 10% RESIDUAL HYDROLYZABLY MATERIAL IN THE MOLECULE, AND FORMALDEHYDE, AND REACTING SAID FORMALDEHYDE AND SAID MEMBER OF SAID CLASS UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 35 TO 80% OF THE HYDROXYL GROUPS OF THE REACTANTS HAVE REACTED.
