A METHOD OF MEASURING THE CYANIDE ION CONCENTRATION OF AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION, IN WHICH A MEASURING ELECTRODE AND A REFERENCE CALOMEL ELECTRODE ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE SOLUTION ARE CONNECTED IN CIRCUIT WITH A MEASURING INSTRUMENT SO AS TO PRODUCE A VOLTAGE ACROSS THE INSTRUMENT, WHICH COMPRISES IMPOSING ACROSS SAID MEASURING ELECTRODE AND A THIRD ELECTRODE WHICH IS IN CONTACT WITH THE SOLUTION A POTENTIAL WHICH FOR AT LEAST A PART OF THE TIME PRODUCES A REVERSAL OF DIRECTION OF POTENTIAL ON THE MEASURING ELECTRODE, WHEREBY THE MEASURING ELECTRODE AT LEAST TO A SMALL DEGREE ACTS AS A DISSOLVING ELECTRODE. SAID MEASURING ELECTRODE BEING FORMED OF AT LEAST ONE SUBSTANCE SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF METALS AND METAL ALLOYS WHICH ARE AT LEAST AS HIGH IN THE ELECTROMOTIVE SERIES AS COPPER, WHICH IN ALKALINE CYANIDE SOLUTIONS FROM COMPLEX COMPOUNDS WITH THE CYANIDES, AND WHICH ARE AT LEAST AS NOBLE AS THE NOBLEST METAL PRESENT IN THE SOLUTION.
