Abstract
D-3,5,31-Triiodothyronine is prepared by the slow iodination of D-3,5-diiodothyronine in an ammonia/methanol mixture with Niodine in potassium iodide solution. The crude product is obtained by dilution of the reaction mixture with water and addition of a mineral acid after the removal of the bulk of the ammonia and methanol. Purification is achieved by hot filtration of a solution of the crude product in 2N-hydrochloric acid followed by chromatographic separation of the above compound and thyronine on a keiselguhr column using 20% chloroform in n-butanol equilibrated with 0.5 N sodium hydroxide.ALSO:Antihypocholesterolemic compositions comprise, as active ingredient, D-3,5,31-triiodothyronine or a non-toxic, pharmaceutically active salt thereof e.g. the mono- and di-alkali metal, ammonium and lower (C1-) alkyl ammonium salts. The compositions may be in solid or liquid forms e.g. a tablet, capsule, troche, lozenge, syrup or liquid suspension suitable for oral administration or injection and may contain conventional carriers and flavouring agents. The active material may also be mixed with the feed or drink of animals for administration thereto. Additional non-hormonal medicinal ingredients e.g. vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids and lipotropic agents e.g. inositol, betaine, methionic and choline.
