AN ULTRASONIC DEVICE COMPRISING A BODY OF PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIAL, MEANS FOR LAUNCHING WITHIN SAID BODY AN ULTRASONIC WAVE HAVING A PARTICLE DISPLACEMENT THAT IS NORMAL TO ONE SURFACE OF SAID BODY AND HAS A MAXIMUM AMPLITUDE AT SAID SURFACE THAT DECREASES WITH DISTANCE AWAY FROM SAID SURFACE, ELECTRODE MEANS INCLUDING A PLURALITY OF CONDUCTIVE MEMBERS SPACED APART ON SAID ONE SURFACE UNIFORMLY FROM EACH OTHER BY ONE WAVELENGTH OF SAID ULTRASONIC WAVE FOR DETECTING A PIEZOELECTRIC FIELD NORMAL TO SAID SURFACE THAT IS GENERATED BY SAID PARTICLE DISPLACEMENT AT A MULTIPLICITY OF SPACED POINTS ALONG THE DIRECTION OF PROPAGATION OF SAID WAVE, AND MEANS FOR ELECTRICALLY CONNECTING SAID CONDUCTIVE MEMBERS TOGETHER TO PRODUCE AN OUTPUT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SIMULTANEOUS SUM OF SAID FIELDS DETECTED AT SAID MULTIPLICITY OF POINTS.
