Abstract

Apparatus for electrically coding discrete opaque articles of variable size of the type having a piece of electrically responsive material placed in a predetermined space relation to at least one side of said article, comprising an electric recording head, means to move said article into operative electrical engagement between said recording head and said material, and information input means connected to said head.

Claims

1. Means for electrically coding discrete articles comprising, an article to be coded, electrically responsive material adapted to be applied to said article, an electric recording head adapted to act on said electrically responsive material, to impart information to said material, means to move said article into operative electrical engagement with respect to said recording head and said material, and information input means connected to said head.

2. Apparatus as in claim 1 having means to affix said electrically responsive material to said articles.

3. Apparatus as in claim 1 having memory means connected between said input means and said head.

4. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said information input means is a character reader.

5. Apparatus as in claim 2 wherein said information input means is a character reader.

6. Apparatus as in claim 3 wherein said information input means is a character reader.

7. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said head imparts information to said material in erasable form.

8. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said material is spaced with respect to one side only.

9. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said electrical coding means is electrostatic.
