Abstract
A hybrid infrared flare is ignited by first igniting a methaneoxidizer mixture with a spark which in turn ignites the fuel grain. Burning is sustained by a continuous flow of oxidizer through the upstream oxidizer injector. Oxidizer is also supplied at the downstream end of the flare to provide an oxidizer sheath around the exhaust flame so that the oxidizer mixes with the fuel-rich exhaust products of the flare to enhance the infrared output regardless of the altitude at which the flare is located. Nitrogen is supplied at the upstream end of the flare to quence combustion between burns when the flares are used in multistart operation.
