A PROCESS FOR THE POLYMERISATION OF AT LEAST ONE CYCLIC OLEFIN CONTAINING 4, 5 OR 7 OR MORE RING CARBON ATOMS IN THE SUBSTANTIAL ABSENCE OF POLAR COMPOUNDS AND UNDER NON-OXIDISING CONDITIONS COMPRISES CONTACTING THE SAID OLEFIN(S) WITH A CATALYST COMPRISING
(A) A HALIDE OR OXYHALIDE OF MOLYBDENUM OR TUNGSTEN, WHEREIN THE OXIDATION STATE OF THE METAL IS 4, 5 OR 6 AND (B) AN ALUMINIUM TRIHALIDE IN ONE EMBODIMENT, POLYMERS HAVING 50% OR MORE OF THE CHAIN CARBON ATOMS CONTAINED IN ISOBUTYLENE UNITS ARE OBTAINED BY THE POLYMERISATION OF CYCLIC OLEFINS.
