A method of preparing a layout of one or more pages of a printed publication comprising the steps of assembling pictures for possible inclusion in the printed publication, assembling samples of type representing textual material for possible inclusion in the printed publication, displaying a composite image, on display means, of selected pictures and type samples, independently adjusting the position, scale, orientation, and brightness of at least one of the components of said image to conform said image to a desired layout, adding a layout grid to said image to form a complete layout image, and recording said complete layout image.

Abstract
The page layout of a printed publication is simulated by an imaging process under the direct physical control of an editor. Controls are provided for selecting pictures and bogus type for simultaneous display on a screen in a simulated layout and for instantaneously cropping, rotating, scaling, positioning, and adjusting brightness levels so that the editor can immediately see and evaluate changes in layout.
