TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM
First Claim
1. In a traffic signal control system for controlling traffic signal lights at a plurality of intersections from a master controller, a backup system comprising, a local controller backup system at each intersection, backup signal transmission lines for carrying command signals from the master to the local controllers in series, means at each local controller for storing numbers representing cycle length, cycle offset and interval end time which are specific for the particular intersection, means at the master for transmitting the command signals, means at each local controller for receiving the command signals, all commands being received at all receivers, means at each local controller for selecting said stored numbers in response to said received command numbers and means responsive thereto for controlling energization of the intersection lights and signals, whereby the cycle, offset and intervals of operation of lights and signals at each intersection follow the command signals from the master in view of the stored numbers at the local controllers.

Abstract
An automobile traffic signal control system controls traffic signals (lights) at a plurality of traffic intersections by way of a master controller which communicates with a local controller at each intersection and transmits pulse trains in sequence to the receivers at all the intersections, whereupon the intersection to which a specific pulse train is addressed stores the pulse train and uses each specific pulse in the train to control a specific light or signal at that intersection. In this manner, all lights and signals at all intersections are specifically each controlled by a specific pulse in a specific pulse train transmitted by the master controller to the local controllers at the intersections.

2. A traffic signal control system as in claim 1 wherein, the command signals are binary numbers and each bit in each number is carried by a separate one of said transmission lines.
-
3. A traffic signal control system as in claim 2 wherein, each bit is represented by the presence or absence of ac power in the associated line.
