Abstract

A FLAME-RETARDANT CARPET WHICH COMPRISES A SOLID POLYMERIC BACKING SHEET, SUCH AS A FLEXIBLE POLYVINYL CHLORIDE OR A NONWOVEN POLYPROPYLENE SHEET TO WHICH FIBERS HAVE BEEN SECURED TO SAID BACKING SHEET, THE FIBERS PROVIDING A FIBER FACE AND THE BACKING SHEET CONTAINING A FLAMERETARDANTT AMOUNT OF AN UNDECOMPOSED BLOWING AGENT, SUCH AS AZODICARBONAMIDE, WHEREBY ON EXPOSURE OF THE CARPET TO OPEN-FLAME OR HIGH TEMPERATURES, THE BLOWING AGENT PROVIDES, SUCH AS BY DECOMPOSITION, A FLAME-RETARDANT QUANTITY OF AN INERT GAS.
