Abstract
REMOVAL OF MERCURY FROM GASES, IN PARTICULAR GASES FROM COMBUSTION OR ROASTING, IS ACHIEVED BY WASHING THE GASES WITH SULPHURIC ACID OF AT LEAST 5% HAVING A TEMPERATURE OF 60 TO 180* C. THE WASHING ACID AND THE GASES CONTAIN CHLORIDE OR CHLORINE COMPOUNDS OR BOTH CHLORINE AND CHLORINE COMPOUNDS IN SUCH AN AMOUNT THAT THE ATOMIC RATIO C1/HG IS AT LEAST 1:1. PRACTICALLY ALL MERCURY AND OTHER MERCURY COMPOUNDS ARE CONVERTED TO MERCURY CHLORIDES WHICH ARE SEPARATED BY CONDENSATION IN A SUCCEEDING COOLING OF THE GAS.
