A PROCESS FOR PREPARING A POLYMERIC MATERIAL WHICH COMPRISES SUBJECTING AN AQUEOUS MIXTURE COMPRISING (1) A STARCH HAVING HYDROXYL, ALDEHYDE OR KETONIC GROUPS OR A PROTEIN HAVING AMINO OR AMIDO GROUPS, AND (2) GRINDING MEDIA, TO AN AGITATION THEREBY MILLING THE STARCH OR PROTEIN, SAID GRINDING MEDI COMPRISING ABOUT 30 TO 70 VOLUME PERCENT, SAID THE TOTAL MIXTURE AND BEING SMALLER THAN ONE-HALF INCH IN OVERALL DIAMETER AND LARGER THAN 400 MESH, AND REACTING THE MILLED STARCH OR PROTEIN WITH A POLYMER OR POLYMERIZABLE MONOMER WHICH IS REACTIVE WITH THE HYDROXYL, ALDEHYDE OR KETONIC GROUPS OF THE STARCH OR THE AMIDO OR AMIDO GROUPS OF THE PROTEIN.

Abstract
The disclosure relates to a process for preparing an adhesive, a novel adhesive, a novel polymeric material and a process for preparing extremely stable emulsions. The process of the invention comprises subjecting an aqueous mixture of starch or protein, or at least two insoluble substances, and grinding media to an agitation in the presence of a pigment, if desired, and then removing the grinding media therefrom. The treated starch or protein may be further reacted with a polymerizable monomer or preformed polymer to form the novel polymeric material. A superior adhesive, which finds particular application in coating base materials, as paper, is obtained. Stable emulsions formed are particularly useful in pharmaceutical and food applications.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein the grinding media is less than one-quarter inch in overall diameter and larger than 200 mesh.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein the grinding media is separated from the milled starch or protein prior to reacting the starch or protein with the polymer or polymerizable monomer.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein milled starch is reacted with the polymer or polymerizable monomer.

7. The process of claim 6 wherein the grinding media is less than one-quarter inch in overall diameter and larger than 200 mesh.

b. polyester resins;
c. epoxy resins;
d. polyurethanes;

g. nylons.
