Abstract

A method for measuring externally of the human body magnetic susceptibility changes within the body particularly the human heart and interpreting these changes in order to quantify the flow of blood.

Claims

1. The method of non-invasively observing blood movement in a living body which comprises the steps of applying magnetic field to at least that portion of the body where the blood movement is to be observed, detecting the changes in magnetic susceptibility in said portion of the body due solely to blood movement and indicating such changes.

2. The method as in claim 1 wherein the body is disposed so that the earth'"'"'s magnetic field is applied to the portion of the body where the blood movement is to be observed.

3. The method as in claim 1 which includes generating said magnetic field by a superconducting magnet.

4. The method as in claim 1 wherein the magnetic susceptibility changes are measured by measuring the changes in the magnetic field external to the body to derive a magnetic susceptibility signal and processing said signal to give an indication of changes.

5. The method as in claim 1 wherein a constant magnetic field is applied to the body portion.

6. The method as in claim 1 wherein a periodically alternating magnetic field is applied to the body portion.

7. The method as in claim 6 wherein said magnetic field is alternated at a frequency which is above the frequency of normal ambient noise and below the frequency where significant eddy currents are induced in the blood.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the changes in the magnetic susceptibility of a given portion of the body are caused by changes in volume of blood contained in a vessel, chamber or organ in that portion of the body.

9. The method as in claim 1 wherein the changes in magnetic susceptibility are caused by non-invasive changes in the composition of the blood.

10. The method of non-invasively determining cardiac output which comprises the steps of applying a magnetic field to the heart region of the body, detecting the changes in magnetic susceptibility in a region containing the heart at systolic and diastolic extension of the heart, subtracting one from the other to obtain a signal representative of the difference of blood volume between systolic and diastolic extension of the heart.

The method of non-invasively determining the cardiac output of the individual chambers of the heart which comprises the steps of applying a magnetic field to the heart region of the body, detecting the changes in magnetic susceptibility in a region containing the heart due to blood volumes at different times during the cardiac cycle to obtain signals representative of the volume of each chamber of the heart at those times during the cardiac cycle.

The method of determining the time varying distribution of blood in a portion of the body which comprises the steps of applying a magnetic field to that portion of the body where the blood is to be observed, detecting magnetic susceptibility changes in said portion of the body by measuring the changes in the magnetic field at a plurality of points external to the body to derive magnetic susceptibility signals and processing said signals to give an indication of the magnetic susceptibility distribution in that region as a function of position as well as time.

13. The method as in claim 12 wherein a single magnetometer is operated to measure the changes in magnetic field at said plurality of points.

14. The method as in claim 12 including the step of measuring the amplitude and direction of the field at each of the plurality of points.
