1. A procedure for rapidly removing neurological tissue that has been exposed to view comprising the steps of:

  • vibrating a tool tip that has a longitudinal axis at an ultrasonic frequency and in a manner such that substantially all of said vibration is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the tip;

    sweeping the tip back and forth over the surface of and in contact with the exposed tissue, said sweeping motion of the tip occurring in a plane generally parallel to said transverse vibration to disintegrate the tissue layer by layer; and

    ,aspirating said disintegrated tissue simultaneously with said sweeping step.
