Abstract

A connector means for conveying fluid from a supply source to a delivery location, said connectors having one conduit extending to the supply source and another conduit extending to the delivery location. Each terminal part has a cylindrical housing with a closed end to which the conduit is joined, and having an opposite operable end which is closed by a penetrable barrier. The barrier and closed end of the housing define an interior environment safe from external contaminants. A male tubular coupler is in one housing, a female tubular coupler is in the other housing, and a penetrator element is disposed around one of the tubular connectors. The penetrable barriers have a film of covered adhesive. The exposed adhesive films are placed in face to face contact to coaxially align the housing parts and bond the barrier membranes to exclude the environment. The penetrator element pierces the adhering barriers by either moving the penetrator element from one housing into the coaxially aligned housing, or by telescoping the housing cylinders so that the adhering barriers are contacted by the fixed penetrator element. The male tubular connector then engages the female tubular connector within a protected environment to effect connection between the supply source and the delivery location.

Claims

1. A connector assembly to prevent entry of contaminants, such as microorganisms, gases and particulates, including,

a pair of terminal connectors each terminal connector having a housing, a conduit extending from one end of the housing and communicating with the interior of the housing, an openable end of each housing closed by a penetratable barrier, a film of adhesive substantially covering the area of at least one of the barriers,

coupling means within each housing communicating with the conduit,

a penetrator element associated with one of the coupling means so that said barriers may be adhesively joined to immobilize any present environmental contaminants and to exclude contact with the environment at an area of adhesion and relative movement between the adhesively joined barriers and the penetrator element results in penetration of the barriers within the area of adhesion and communication between the terminal connectors so that fluid may move from a supply source to a delivery location through the conduits of the terminal connectors.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 1 above, wherein one of said terminal connectors has the conduit mounted to a closed end of the housing, the opposite openable end being an open end covered with the barrier, said open end defined by a continuous edge and said barrier extending at least to said continuous edge, said penetrating element being coaxially aligned with the associated coupling means, said penetrator element and coupling means being movable to penetrate the adhesively joined barriers within said area of adhesion in the connected terminals, whereby said movable coupling means engages the coupling means in the other of said terminals.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 1 above, wherein each of said housings is cylindrical, one cylindrical housing having a reduced diameter dimensioned relative to the other housing so that the reduced diameter cylindrical housing telescopically engages the other cylindrical housing, each of said cylindrical housings having an open end defined by a continuous edge, the open end of the reduced diameter cylindrical housing being covered by said barrier to at least engage said continuous edge, the barrier in the other of said cylindrical housings being recessed relative to the open end thereof, and said coupling means being stationary in each of said cylindrical housings, whereby telescopic movement of said smaller diameter cylindrical housing results in face to face adhesion of the penetratable barriers followed by penetration of the adhesively joined barriers within the area of adhesion when they are pushed against the penetrator element.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 3 above, wherein said recessed barrier includes an annular support to engage the interior of the cylindrical housing, so that said recessed barrier is moved by said reduced diameter cylindrical housing against the penetrating element associated with the coupling means in the other cylindrical housing.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 4 above, wherein said reduced diameter cylindrical housing has an annular spacer mounted to the outside of the cylindrical housing adjacent the open end, and said annular spacer having a plurality of air passages to permit escape of compressed air during movement of the terminal members.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 1 above, wherein each of said terminal connectors include a cylindrical housing, and wherein the coupling means within the housings are cylindrical, each housing having an open end defined by a continuous edge, conduits mounted to opposite closed ends of each cylindrical housing, and said coupling means being a male tubular coupler in one of the cylindrical housings and a female tubular coupler in the other of the cylindrical housings, and one of said tubular couplers having said penetrator element concentrically mounted with a penetrating end in advance of the tubular coupler.

7. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 6 above, wherein the adhesive film includes an antimicrobiological agent.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 7 above, wherein the barrier extends at least to the continuous edge of the open end of each cylindrical housing to allow coaxial alignment of the cylindrical housings by effecting substantially coterminous edge contact at the respective open ends, and the tubular couplers with the concentrically mounted penetrator element being movable to penetrate said barrier and engage the tubular coupler in the other cylindrical housing.

9. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 8 above, wherein said concentrically mounted penetrator element has a leading cutting edge portion and a trailing pushing portion.

10. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 8 above, wherein the respective barriers have a convex configuration so that the high central portions of the barriers make initial contact and the terminating portions make peripheral final contact when pressing the barriers together.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 4 above, wherein said movable recessed barrier is part of an assembly which includes an O-ring seal and a substantially rigid annular pusher element, and said reduced diameter cylindrical housing having an exterior annular spacer with a plurality of grooves which extend to the opposite sides of the spacer and which are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the reduced diameter cylindrical housing, whereby compressed air can escape through the grooves during telescoping engagement of cylindrical housing parts.

12. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 1 above, and which further includes a removable cover mounted to the barrier with the adhesive film.

13. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 12 above, wherein said removable cover is mounted to the openable end of a cylindrical housing and the barrier is recessed relative to said openable end.

A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 1 above, wherein at least one of said barriers is part of a laminated structure assembly having an outer substantially inelastic barrier facing towards the openable end, an inner substantially elastic barrier facing towards the closed end, and an adhesive film on said outer, substantially inelastic barrier.

15. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 1 above, and which further includes a source of power, and means to couple the external source of power with at least one of said barriers, so that said power source can raise the temperature of the barriers sufficient to sterilize at least portions of the barriers after such barriers are adhesively joined.

16. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 15 above, which further includes a conductive element associated with a barrier.

17. A claim which includes the features of claim 16 above, wherein said power source is a voltage source, and the conductive element is a fusible link extending substantially across the barrier.

18. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 16 above, wherein said power source is a radio frequency transmitter, and said conductor is a metal associated with said barrier.

19. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 15 wherein the power source is an ultrasonic generator.

20. A connector assembly which includes the features of claim 15 wherein the conductive element is a ferro-magnetic material, and the power source is meant for inducing an electric current in the conductive element.
