Abstract

Energy-absorbing interlayers and glass laminates prepared therefrom for use as automobile windshields and other safety glass applications are disclosed. The interlayers are made from a poly(lactone-urethane) in which the molecular weight and structure of the lactone moiety is carefully controlled so as to get optimum energy-absorbing and optical properties.

Claims

1. An energy-absorbing laminate comprising at least one rigid transparent sheet laminated to a flexible non-blooming layer of a polyurethane comprising the polymerizate of:

(A) an organic polyisocyanate,

(B) a polylactone polyol having a hydroxyl number within the range of 62 to 140 inclusive formed from polymerizing an unsubstituted lactone having 6 to 8 carbon atoms with an organic polyhydroxyl-containing compound selected from the class consisting of;

(1) aliphatic diols free of alkyl substitution and oxyalkylated products of these diols,

(2) a hydroxyl-terminated polyester having a hydroxyl number below 600 formed from an organic polycarboxylic acid containing from 3 to 10 carbon atoms and aliphatic diols free of alkyl substitution and oxyalkylated products of these diols,

(C) a compound containing at least two active hydrogens per molecule reactive with the isocyanate group having a molecular weight less than 250 selected from the class consisting of aliphatic diols free of alkyl substitution, aliphatic triols and mixtures thereof.

2. The energy-absorbing laminate of claim 1 in which the rigid transparent sheet is glass.

3. An energy-absorbing laminate comprising layers of rigid transparent sheets selected from the class consisting of glass, polycarbonate and acrylic bonded to one another with the polyurethane layer of claim 1.

4. An energy-absorbing laminate comprising two rigid transparent sheets sandwiching a composite layer consisting essentially of a sheet of polyvinyl butyral bonded to a sheet of polyurethane of claim 1.

5. The energy-absorbing laminate of claim 1 in which a layer of normally blooming polyurethane is positioned between the rigid transparent sheets and the non-blooming polyurethane layer.

6. The laminate of claim 1 in which the polyurethane layer has a thickness of from 15 to 60 mils (38.10×

10^-5 to 152.40×

10^-5 m).

7. The laminate of claim 1 in which the polyurethane layer is of substantially uniform thickness and the rate of change in thickness within the interlayer is sufficiently small to produce a diopter of less than 0.006.

8. The laminate of claim 1 in which the polyurethane layer has a light transmission of at least 70 percent and less than 2 percent haze.

9. The laminate of claim 1 which has a mean penetration velocity at 0°
