Speed-related indication comparisons in internal combustion engine diagnostics
First Claim
1. Apparatus for measuring a parameter on an internal combustion engine in relation to a predetermined specification speed, comprising:
- means for registering at least one speed data manifestation identifying a test speed at which a corresponding parameter of an engine is to be measured;
a transducer adapted to be disposed with respect to the engine to sense said parameter and provide a parameter signal indicative thereof;
speed sensing means, adapted to be disposed for response to mechanical movement of a portion of the engine in relationship to the angular revolutions of the engine, for repetitively providing successive measured data manifestations of the time elapsed during angular revolution of the engine through a known angle and therefore indicative of the speed of the engine as the engine rotates; and
processing means, responsive to said registering means and to said speed means, for converting said speed data manifestation into a corresponding specification data manifestation indicative of the time required for the engine to rotate said known angle at the speed indicated by said speed data manifestation, for comparing said successive measured data manifestations with said specification data manifestation and for sampling said parameter signal in response thereto.

Abstract
Diagnosing an internal combustion engine includes full throttle, specific speed tests such as measuring fuel pressure at two checkpoint speeds and at rated speed, and determining the pressure and speed where the governor reduces fuel pressure, an aneroid checkpoint of fuel pressure as a function of engine speed, and a fuel inlet restriction test, all without a dynomometer. The tests are performed with the throttle wide open, so that pressure can be measured downstream of the throttle at accessible taps, and/or to provide maximum fuel-flow test conditions. The speed comparisons are made during an acceleration with the throttle fully open, the instantaneous speed of which is accurately determined by flywheel tooth sensing. The speeds at which the specification pressure is to be checked is determined by comparing indications related to specification speeds expressed in terms of elapsed time between teeth of the flywheel, for a flywheel having the total number of teeth of the engine under test, rather than requiring full comparisons with actual speed expressed in terms of revolutions per minute.
