1. Apparatus for measurement of pulsatile blood flow rate through a tissue area, said apparatus comprising:
- input means having a light-emissive device and a photosensitive device for providing a first electrical signal in response to pulsatile variations in the quantity of light from said light-emissive device which passes through said tissue and which falls on said photosensitive device;
second means coupled to the input means for providing a second electrical signal which has a logarithmic relationship to said first electrical signal;
display means coupled to the second means for providing a visual indication in response to said second electrical signal, said display means including a plurality of indicators, a corresponding legend, and means for activating said indicators in response to said second electrical signal;
said legend comprising a first set of symbolic markings approximately representing an average pulsatile blood flow rate; and
said legend further comprising a second set of symbolic markings representing the approximate error to be expected in an oximeter reading at the corresponding blood flow rate.

Abstract
A perfusion meter comprising a hand-held battery operated optical plethysmograph displays an indication of blood flow rate in response to the time-varying optical transmission characteristics of an ear or other organ. This indication, called the perfusion index, is proportional to both the amplitude and frequency of variations in the dynamic optical transmission characteristics of the ear or other organ.
