Abstract

The specification describes an electrolytic cell for the treatment of water, comprising a closed container with a lower inlet opening and an upper outlet opening for the water and a cathode and an anode. In the interior of the electrolytic cell particles are located whose density is higher than that of water and which are prevented from leaving the electrolytic cell by gratings adjacent to the inlet and the outlet.

Claims

1. An electrolytic cell for the treatment of water, which comprises a closed container with a lower inlet opening and an upper outlet opening for the water, at least two radially positioned electrodes which are adapted to be connected with the positive and with the negative pole of a DC source, particles located in the interior space of the electrolytic cell whose density is higher than that of water and gratings arranged in back of the lower water inlet opening and in front of the upper water outlet opening, said gratings having openings smaller than the diameter of the particles in the interior of the electrolytic cell, to prevent the particles from emerging from the electrolytic cell.

The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1, including mating conical lids, seals for said lids, a central tube and at least one control ring and wherein the construction is symmetrical, said container is cylindrical and tubular having said two openings closed by said mating conical lids in a liquid-tight manner and which respectively in their centers on one side thereof are provided with a connection for a water supply and a water removing tube and on whose opposite sides said respective grating is provided in whose center said tube or a grid-shaped tube is arranged whose length corresponds to the distance between the two gratings and between the tubular container and the upper and lower lids seals and said contact ring is positioned intermediate said lids and with molded-in-contacts or spring pressure contacts.

The electrolytic cell according to claim 2 including a plurality of groups of a grid tube, porous membranes, radial electrodes and gratings, inside each grid tube is a porous membrane, said group of grid tubes, porous membranes and electrodes being longitudinally separated from the next group by two gratings.

The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 3, wherein the external tube is interrupted and in that the two parts have inserted rings, in which contacts or spring pressure contacts are molded so that it is possible to supply current to the electrodes arranged in the interior and respectively between two gratings.

The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 wherein said electrodes and their radially outer end are connected with the external current source by means of narrow titanium strips attached by spot welding, silver soldering or riveting, or by titanium spring contacts, which are passed through said contact ring in an outward direction.

6. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 wherein said electrodes consist of aluminum, iron, copper, silver, platinum or tantalum.

7. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 6, including a porous membrane surrounding the electrodes against impact of particles.

8. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 wherein said inner space is filled with particles to the extent of 1/3 to 3/4.

9. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 8, wherein said particles are spherical or substantially spherical and have a diameter of approximately 0.5 to approximately 10 mm.

10. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 8 wherein said particles have a density of approximately 1.1 to approximately 4.0 g per cc.

11. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 wherein said particles are glass spheres, Al₂ O₃ spheres, ceramic spheres, (porcelain spheres), plastics spheres or spheres of an ion exchanger resin.

12. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 wherein said particles have a porosity of 10 to 30%.

13. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 10, wherein the pores of the particles are filled with an ion exchanger resin.

14. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 13, wherein said ion exchanger resin is selected from the group consisting of:

strongly acidic sulfonated polystyrenes and strongly basic polystyrenes of the trimethylbenzylammonium type.

15. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1, including a positive electrode arranged in the center of said cell having the form of a tube and a tubular porous membrane and a grid in the form of a tube surrounding externally said positive electrode.

16. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 15, wherein said grid tube defines an anode compartment, said anode compartment having at one or both ends an opening with an adjustable size.

The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 for the removal of contaminating materials dissolved or suspended in water, wherein said radially arranged electrodes consist of aluminum, iron or copper and includes in the center an empty tube of an electrically non-conducting material whose two ends are open or closed.

18. The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 for the disinfection of water, wherein said radially arranged electrodes consist of silver and includes in the center an electrically non-conducting material whose two ends are open or closed.

The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 for the disinfection or chloride-containing or chloride-free water by the formation of chlorine or per-compounds, including a positive platinum or tantalum electrode arranged in the center, a porous membrane and a grid tube surrounding said electrode, said grid tube defining an anode compartment and having at the top an opening with an adjustable size and said electrodes being radial and consisting of aluminum, iron, copper, platinum or tantalum.

The electrolytic cell in accordance with claim 1 for the partial or complete removal of temporary hardness (lime hardness) from water, wherein said radial electrodes consist of copper, iron or aluminum and forming a part of a cathode compartment, said cell including a tubular platinum or tantalum electrode arranged in the center, a porous membrane and a grid tube surrounding said center electrode, said grid tube defining an anode compartment having at both ends a respective opening with an adjustable diameter, the outflow from the cathode compartment and the outflow from the anode compartment being removed separately.

An electrolytic cell for the partial or complete removal of temporary hardness (line hardness) from water, comprising a closed container with a lower inlet opening and an upper outlet opening for the water and at least two radial electrodes consisting of copper, iron or aluminum which are adapted to be connected with the positive and with the negative pole of a DC source, a tubular platinum or tantalum electrode arranged in the center of the cell, a porous member and a grid tube surrounding said centrally positioned electrode, said grid tube defining an anode compartment having at both ends a respective opening with an adjustable diameter, the outflow from the water passing between the radial electrodes and the outflow from the anode compartment being removed separately.

An electrolytic cell for the disinfection of chloride-containing or chloride-free water by the formation of chlorine or per-compounds comprising a closed container with a lower inlet opening and an upper outlet opening for the water and at least two radial electrodes consisting of aluminum, iron, copper, platinum or tantalum which are adapted to be connected with the positive and with the negative pole of a DC source, a positive platinum or tantalum electrode arranged in the center, a porous membrane and a grid tube surrounding said central electrode, said grid tube defining an anode compartment and having at the top an opening with an adjustable size.
