1. In a method for compacting soil by supplying energy to a plurality of compacting tools in a manner to cause the tools to undergo individual vertical vibratory movements and to strike the soil surface while they travel along a path, the tools being spaced apart in the direction of travel, the improvement comprising:

  • monitoring one of the amount of settlement of the compacted soil at the soil surface and the vibrational power supplied to the tools by measuring the difference in height between corresponding points of adjacent tools when each is at the lowest point of its vibratory movement; and

controlling the supply of energy to the tools in order to vary the amplitude of the vibratory movements of the tools in dependence on the monitoring result in a direction to maximize the resulting degree of soil compaction.
