1. A system for land seismic exploration comprising:

  • (a) a seismic source means for generating seismic energy in an elastic body;

    (b) a plurality of data acquisition units for detecting, partially processing, and recording the seismic energy emanating from the elastic body, each data acquisition unit including a seismic sensor responsive to seismic energy emanating from the elastic body to produce electrical representations thereof;

    a signal conditioning unit having an analog to digital system including a plurality of amplifier/quantizer stages bounded to prevent saturation and operatively coupled together with bit redundancy between adjacent stages for providing a full range of amplitude signals, and a data recorder means operatively connected to the data processor output for recording the partially processed data; and

    (c) a controller for controlling operation of the data acquisition units.
