Abstract

A method of and apparatus for controlling the operation of a vehicle by electrical signals generated in a manner dependent on the road speed of the vehicle wherein the method comprises setting up a specific magnetic field in association with a normally unmagnetized component of the vehicle which rotates at a speed proportional to the road speed of the veicle and sensing variations in the magnetic field in a coil located on the opposite side of a ferromagnetic member of the vehicle to the component and amplifying the signal through a high gain amplifier.

Claims

1. A method of generating an electrical signal proportional to the road speed of a vehicle comprising setting up a specific magnetic field in association with a normally unmagnetized component of the vehicle which rotates at a speed proportional to the road speed of the vehicle, the rotation of said component causing variations in said magnetic field, and sensing said variations in the magnetic field by means of a signal generating sensor including a coil, said signal generating sensor located entirely on one side of a ferromagnetic member which is disposed between said component and signal generating sensor, and amplifying the signal generating sensor output signal through a high gain amplifier.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the magnetic field is set-up by the physical attachment of at least one permanent magnet to the rotatable component.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the magnetic field is applied to the component by the magnetization of at least part of the rotating component.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein at least part of the rotating component is permanently magnetized.

5. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which the magnetic field is set up by a polarized magnet on the opposite side of a ferromagnetic vehicle member to a ferromagnetic rotatable component having an irregular peripheral surface within its circumference of rotation, the variations in this field due to rotation of the component being sensed by said signal generating sensor located on the same side of the ferromagnetic vehicle member as the magnet.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said signal generating sensor is positioned outside a speedometer cable sheath and a disc magnet for setting up said magnetic field is located on and rotates with the speedometer cable.

7. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said signal generating sensor is positioned outside a speedometer cable sheath and said magnetic field is set up by at least part of the speedometer cable being magnetized.

The method as claimed in claim 7 wherein said magnetic field is set up by a magnetic member located to embrace the speedometer sheath which carries a pair of coils, one adapted to magnetize the inner cable by pulsed application of an intense electrical current and the other forming the signal generating sensor to monitor the variation of the magnetic field caused by rotation of the cable.

The method claimed in claim 1 wherein a polarized magnet for setting up said magnetic field and said signal generating sensor coil are attached to a ferromagnetic member of a motor vehicle on the opposite side to a ferromagnetic rotatable component having an irregular surface within its circumference of rotation.
