A nonaqueous secondary cell comprising a negative electrode, an electrolyte, and a positive electrode, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT at least one of said negative electrode and said positive electrode consists essentially of a first layered chalcogenide having the nominal atom composition Liy MX2, where M is at least one member selected from the group consisting of V and Ti, X is at least one member selected from the group consisting of S and Se and y is greater than 1.0 and less than or equal to 2.0.
