Abstract

A capacitive liquid level sensor for sensing the height of liquid in a liquid storage tank at a plurality of locations. The liquid level sensor includes a cylindrical housing which extends along a line perpendicular to a predetermined reference level which is approximately parallel to the expected level of liquid in the storage tank. Several capacitors are included within the housing, each employing an air/liquid dielectric, whereby the capacitance values of the capacitors are individually variable due to any variations in the liquid height at each location. Several alternative cross-sectional structures are shown whereby the cylindrical housings are employed as a common plate to the several capacitors located within each housing.

Claims

1. A capacitive fuel sender mounted in a fuel storage tank for sensing the level of fuel over a predetermined height range comprising:

a cylindrical housing, extending along a line perpendicular to the expected level of said fuel in said storage tank, being formed of an electrically conductive material and defining a common capacitive plate;

a plurality of capacitive plates within said housing extending parallel to said line and being continuously separated over said predetermined height range; and

a dielectric between said plates including air above said fuel level and fuel at said level and below;

wherein said sender includes a plurality of capacitors; and

said capacitive plates within said housing define the individual ones of said plurality of said capacitors each in combination with said common capacitive plate.

2. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 1, wherein a cross-section of said housing taken along a plane parallel to said expected level is "Y" shaped and defines at least two capacitive sensing arms;

said housing contains a centrally positioned capacitive plate within each arm; and

said dielectric is located between the inner walls of said housing and said capacitive plates.

3. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 2, wherein said housing defines three sensing arms extending outward from a central axis of said cylinder equiangularly spaced around said central axis.

4. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 1, wherein the cross-section of said housing taken along a plane parallel to said expected level is circularly shaped and defines at least two capacitive senders;

and

said housing contains at least two arcuate capacitive plates being partially concentric with said housing and equally spaced from the inner walls of said housing, whereby said dielectric is located between the inner walls of said housing and said arcuate capacitive plates.

5. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 4, wherein said housing defines three capacitive sensors being equally spaced from a central axis of said cylindrical housing and having equal arc lengths.

6. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 5, wherein said housing incudes means for venting the dielectric to accommodate for changing fuel levels.

7. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 1, wherein the cross-section of said housing taken along a plane parallel to said expected level is triangular shaped and defines at least two capacitive sensors;

said housing contains at least two capacitive plates equally spaced from the inner walls of said housing; and

said dielectric is located between the inner walls of said housing and said equally spaced plates.

8. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 7, wherein said housing cross-section is shaped as an equilateral triangle and contains three capacitive plates of equal area equally spaced from said inner walls.

9. A capacitive fuel sender as in claim 8, wherein said housing further includes means centrally located therein for retarding fuel wave motion.

10. A capacitive fuel sender for sensing the level of fuel over a predetermined range of height in a fuel storage tank, comprising:

a cylindrical housing extending along a line perpendicular to the normally expected level of said fuel in said storage tank;

a plurality of capacitive plates within said housing extending parallel to said line and being continuously separated over said predetermined height range;

means for mounting said capacitive plates within said housing to maintain said continuous separation; and

means allowing said fuel to enter said housing and maintain a level between said plates corresponding to the level of said fuel in said tank;

wherein said sender includes a plurality of capacitors; and

wherein said cylindrical housing is formed of an electrically conductive material defining a common capacitive plate for said plurality of capacitors and said capacitive plates within said housing define the individual ones of said plurality of capacitors in combination with said common capacitive plate.

11. A capacitive type liquid level sensor mounted in a liquid storage tank defining a plurality of capacitors for sensing the level of said liquid over a predetermined height range comprising:

a cylindrical housing, formed of an electrically conductive material to define a common capacitive plate for said plurality of capacitors and extending along a line perpendicular to the expected level of said liquid in said storage tank;

a plurality of capacitive plates defining the individual ones of said plurality of said capacitors each in combination with said common capacitive plate, within said housing extending parallel to said line and being continuously separated over said predetermined height range; and

a dielectric between said plates including air above said liquid level and said liquid at said level and below.

12. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 11, wherein a cross-section of said housing taken along a plane parallel to said expected level is "Y" shaped and defines at least two capacitive sensing arms;

said housing contains a centrally positioned capacitive plate within each arm; and

said dielectric is located between the inner walls of said housing and said capacitive plates.

13. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 12, wherein said housing defines three sensing arms extending outward from a central axis of said cylinder equiangularly spaced around said central axis.

14. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 11, wherein the cross-section of said housing taken along a plane parallel to said expected level is circularly shaped and defines at least two capacitive senders;

and

said housing contains at least two arcuate capacitive plates being partially concentric with said housing and equally spaced from the inner walls of said housing, whereby said dielectric is located between the inner walls of said housing and said arcuate capacitive plates.

15. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 14, wherein said housing defines three capacitive sensors being equally spaced from a central axis of said cylindrical housing and having equal arc lengths.

16. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 15, wherein said housing includes means for venting the dielectric to accommodate for changing fuel levels.

17. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 11, wherein the cross-section of said housing taken along a plane parallel to said expected level is triangular shaped and defines at least two capacitive sensors;

said housing contains at least two capacitive plates equally spaced from the inner walls of said housing; and

said dielectric is located between the inner walls of said housing and said equally spaced plates.

18. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 17, wherein said housing cross-section is shaped as an equilateral triangle and contains three capacitive plates of equal area equally spaced from said inner walls.

19. A capacitive type liquid level sensor as in claim 18, wherein said housing further includes means centrally located therein for retarding fuel wave motion.

20. A capacitive type liquid level sensor defining a plurality of capacitors for sensing the level of liquid over a predetermined range of height in a liquid storage tank, comprising:

a cylindrical housing formed of an electrically conductive material defining a common capactive plate for said plurality of capacitors, extending along a line perpendicular to the normally expected level of said liquid in said storage tank;

a plurality of capacitive plates within said housing defining the individual ones of said plurality of capacitors in combination with said common capacitive plate, extending parallel to said line and being continuously separated over said predetermined height range;

means for mounting said capacitive plates within said housing to maintain said continuous separation; and

maintain a level between said plates corresponding to the level of said liquid in said tank.
