A method for the removal of soil containing free or combined organic acids from surfaces comprising applying to soil containing free or combined organic acids an effective amount of a composition comprising (A) at least one polyhydric alcohol or a lower aliphatic ether or ester thereof having at least 2 free hydroxy groups, (B) 1.0 to 500% by weight of at least one alkali metal bicarbonate based on the weight of the polyhydric alcohol and (C) 5.0 to 1000% by weight of at least one alkali metal salt of a weak organic acid based on the weight of the polyhydric alcohol, heating the composition to a temperature of 250°
