Abstract

Novel dyestuffs containing amino or imino groups and their preparation are provided.

These dyestuffs have the general formula ##STR1## wherein R is --N(R₃)CH₂ --Z or --N═CH--Z, X is N or CR₆ where R₆ is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl group, Y is S.sup.⊕, O.sup.⊕, N or N.sup.⊕ R₇ where R₇ is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl group, R₁, R₁ and R₂ each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or R₁ and R₂ together with the nitrogen atom complete a heterocyclic ring, or one of R₁ and R₂ can be hydrogen and the other of R₁ and R₂ can be aryl, Z is a group which comprises both an activating group which contains at least one double bond system and also a ballasting group and R₄ and R₅ each represent optional substituents or form an annelated benzene ring. The new dyestuffs are useful in the photographic field especially in the photographic dye diffusion transfer process for the production of photographic images.

Claims

1. A compound of the general formula ##STR20## or of the general formula ##STR21## wherein X is N, Y is S.sup.⊕

, O.sup.⊕

, N or N.sup.⊕

R₇ where R₇ is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl or phenyl substituted by alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen, hydroxy or carbonyl, R₁, R₂ and R₃ each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or R₁ and R₂ together with the nitrogen atom complete a heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered ring, or one of R₁ and R₂ can be hydrogen and the other of R₁ and R₂ can be phenyl, Z is a member selected from the group of the formulae ##STR22## wherein R₈ comprises a ballasting group of at least 10 carbon atoms, and R₄ and R₅ each represent alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, amino or halogen or form an annelated benzene ring.

2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein R₈ is alkyl or alkoxy of 10 to 24 carbon atoms.

3. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR23## or when partially oxidised has the formula ##STR24## where R₁, R₂ and Z have the meanings assigned to them in claim 1 and B.sup.⊖

4. A compound according to claim 3, wherein R₂ and R₁ are methyl or ethyl.

5. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR25## or when partially oxidised of the formula ##STR26## where R₄, R₅, R₇ and Z have the meanings assigned to them in claim 1 and B.sup.⊖

is an anion.

6. A compound according to claim 5 where R₇ is phenyl.

7. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR27## or when partially oxidised of the formula ##STR28## where R₁, R₂, R₅ and Z have the meanings assigned to them in claim 1 and B.sup.⊖

is an anion.

8. A compound according to claim 7, wherein R₅ is methyl.

9. A compound of claim 1 having the formula ##STR29##
