Abstract

Additives, such as stabilizers, antioxidants, anti-static agents etc., are intimately blended with an irradiation-responsive substance, such as an optical brightener, and incorporated in a thermoplastic polymeric material which is then subjected to irradiation to determine the degree of uniformity of distribution of the additive-brightener blend.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring the distribution in a thermoplastic organic polymeric material of one or more additives normally solid at room temperature and selected from the group consisting of anti-oxidants, stabilizers, lubricants, flameproofing agents, slip agents, anti-blocking agents and anti-static agents, which comprises mixing said polymeric material with a uniform blend consisting essentially of said additive(s) and a compound which gives a detectable response to irradiation in the presence of said additive(s) and said polymeric material, said additive(s) and said compound being in cohesive relationship to one another, and subjecting at least a portion of the thus-treated material to the irradiation to which said compound is responsive and observing the presence or absence of a response to irradiation in said portion.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the irradiation-responsive compound is a fluorescent compound.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the polymeric material is mixed with solid particles of the uniform blend.

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein the additive-containing blend and the organic polymeric material are each in the form of separate discreet particles when subjected to irradiation.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the concentration of additive in the irradiated portion of polymeric material is determined from the magnitude of the response to irradiation.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein the additive-containing blend is dispersed in a melt of said organic polymeric material prior to subjection of the organic polymeric material to irradiation.

7. A method according to claim 3 wherein the solid particles have been prepared by

(a) melting at least one of the components to be blended, thoroughly mixing all of the components in the resulting molten mass and converting the resulting uniform blend to solid particulate form, or

(b) dissolving all or all but one of the components to be blended in a suitable solvent, thoroughly mixing the dissolved component(s) and any undissolved component and removing the solvent by evaporation.

8. A method according to claim 7 wherein the solid particles of the uniform blend are prepared by procedure (a).

9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the irradiation-responsive compound is a fluorescent compound which absorbs ultraviolet light in the range of 300 to 420 nanometer and fluoresces in the range 400 to 700 nanometers and has a log fluorescent intensity equal to or greater than 3 at room temperature at a concentration of 1 part per million in a solvent mixture of diethylether, isopentane, ethanol and chloroform in a volume ratio of 75:

20, said irradiation-responsive compound being employed in an amount of from 0.01 to 100 parts per million parts by weight of polymeric material.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the polymeric material is a member selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polyurethanes, polyacrylates, ABS copolymers, polystyrenes, polycarbonates, polyvinyl chloride, polyesters, synthetic rubber and polyolefins.

11. A method according to claim 8 wherein an additive is melted.

12. A method according to claim 2 wherein the fluorescent compound absorbs ultraviolet light in the range 300 to 420 nanometers and fluoresces in the range 400 to 700 nanometers.

13. A method according to claim 12 wherein the fluorescent compound has a log fluorescent intensity equal to or greater than 3 at room temperature and at a concentration of 1 part per million in a solvent mixture of diethylether, isopentane, ethanol and chloroform in a volume ratio of 75:

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the irradiation-responsive compound is employed in an amount of from 0.01 to 100 parts per million parts by weight of the polymeric material.

15. A method according to claim 2 wherein the irradiation-responsive compound is a compound having utility as an optical brightener.

A method according to claim 1 which includes the further step of controlling the rate of feeding or degree of mixing the uniform blend in the thermoplastic organic polymeric material on the basis of the observed presence or absence of a response to irradiation, whereby uniform distribution of additive(s) in the polymeric material is achieved.

A method of monitoring the distribution in a thermoplastic organic polymeric material of one or more additives normally solid at room temperature and selected from the group consisting of anti-oxidants, stabilizers, lubricants, flameproofing agents, slip agents, anti-blocking agents and anti-static agents, which comprises mixing said polymeric material with a uniform intimate blend of said additive(s) and a compound which gives a detectable response to irradiation in the presence of said additive(s) and said polymeric material, said additive(s) and said compound adhering to one another in said blend as a result of having been mixed together in a melt of at least one of said additive(s) and/or said irradiation-responsive compound, and subjecting at least a portion of the thus-treated material to the irradiation to which said compound is responsive and observing the presence or absence of a response to irradiation in said portion.
