Programmable thermostat
First Claim
1. A programmable thermostat comprising:
- a housing assembly;
switching means mounted on said assembly for selective operation by the user;
an indicator mounted on said assembly for signaling to the user;
a circuit unit mounted within said assembly and interconnected to receive signals from said switching means and to deliver signals to said indicator, said circuit unit including a read only memory permanently programmed to enable defining a pattern of unit values of temperature desired at different times on different days of a week selectively all individually and in various combinations of said days and the times therein, said circuit unit further including a random access memory, coupled to and addressable by said switching means, interrelated with said read only memory for effecting the selected particular definition of said pattern;
a temperature sensor mounted within said assembly and responsive to ambient air temperature to deliver a temperature-representative signal to said circuit unit;
and connecting means for coupling said circuit unit to an external device to be controlled in response to previous operation of said switching means and governed in response to said temperature-representative signal.

Abstract
A programmable thermostat features a memory unit receptive of unit values of temperature desired at different times on different days all individually or in various combinations both as to days and times. An output device signals a temperature control system. As controlled by a clock, the memory unit is addressed during different times of the different days to provide a signal representing the corresponding value desired. Existing temperature level is sensed and compared with each value so as to develop an error signal. In response to that error signal, the output is operated in a direction to reduce the difference between actual and desired temperatures. Numerous details as to layout, construction and circuitry are presented.

2. A programmable thermostat comprising:
-
a memory unit including a read only memory permanently programmed to enable the defining of a chosen pattern of unit values of temperature desired at different times on different days of a week all individually or in various combinations of said days and the times therein; said memory unit further including a random access memory interrelated with said read only memory for effecting choice of a selected particular definition of such patterns; means for selectively entering into said random access memory a chosen pattern of unit values of temperature desired at different times on different days of a week all individually or in various combinations of said days and the times therein; an output device for governing a temperature-determining system; a clock; means controlled by said clock to address said memory unit during said different times of said different days and determine said values; means for sensing an existing temperature level; means coupled to both said random access memory and said read only memory, for comparing the determined value, at said different times on said different days, with said level to develop a control signal; and means responsive to said control signal for operating said output device in a manner to effect reduction of the difference between said determined value and said temperature level. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)
