1. A method of producing carbon-containing component parts of metallurgical units which are protected against oxidation, comprising the steps of:

  • (a) impregnating a porous carbon-containing component part with orthophosphoric acid to substantially fill the pores thereof with said orthophosphoric acid;

    (b) drying said component part until the moisture is completely removed from the pores of the carbon-containing material;

    (c) further impregnating the thus orthophosphoric acid-impregnated component part with an organoelement compound based on an element selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti, and Al, which organoelement compound is capable of reacting with orthophosphoric acid to form phosphates of said elements; and

    (d) heating the thus further impregnated component part to a temperature at which said organoelement compound reacts with orthophosphoric acid to form the corresponding phosphates, said phosphates being formed both in the pores and on the surface of the carbon-containing material.
