1. In a multiphase alternator battery charging system, a detector monitoring the voltage ripple in the rectified electrical output signal of said alternator comprising:

  • means for monitoring the undulating rectified electrical signal supplied to the battery by said alternator and producing a signal level in response thereto,means coupled to said alternator for measuring the rotational speed in said alternator and producing a signal level in response thereto;

    means coupled to the field coil of said alternator determining the excitation current supplied thereto;

    variable threshold means, combining the output signal from said rotational speed means and said determined field coil excitation current, producing a combined signal level; and

    comparison means, responsive to the signal level from said monitoring means and said combined signal level, producing an output signal level indicative of the detection of a voltage ripple in excess of said combined signal level.
