Abstract

A novel method and system are disclosed for detecting the breakpoint of a perturbed flow stream. The scattering and extinction of light caused by a perturbed stream at a preselected flow stream sensing point therealong is measured to produce a real time waveform proportional thereto. The real time waveform is differentiated to produce a differentiated waveform, which is then selectively monitored to distinguish a waveform exhibiting substantially three (positive and negative) peaks per cycle, whereby such detection indicates that at least a portion of the breakpoint region of said flow stream corresponds with said flow stream sensing point. In order to align the stream sensing point with respect to a preselected point within the breakpoint region of the flow stream, the breakpoint region of the stream is caused to move with respect to the stream sensing point until the breakpoint pulse width of one of the peaks corresponds with a preselected pulse width reference.

Claims

1. A method of detecting at least the breakpoint region of a perturbed flow stream, comprising:

(a) measuring at least the scattering of light caused by said perturbed stream at a preselected flow stream sensing point therealong to produce a real time waveform proportional thereto;

(b) differentiating said real time waveform to produce a differentiated waveform;

(c) selectively monitoring said differentiated waveform to distinguish a waveform exhibiting substantially three, positive and negative peaks per cycle, whereby detection of said three peaks per cycle indicates that said breakpoint region of said flow stream corresponds with said flow stream sensing point.

2. The method of claim 1 comprising the additional step of moving said flow stream sensing point relative to said stream to locate said breakpoint region.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein step (c) further comprises the step of distinguishing per cycle, a first peak of a given polarity and two successive peaks of opposite polarity.

The method of claim 1 wherein step (c) comprises the steps of establishing threshold positive and negative peak-amplitude valves at preselected proportions of the expected values of said three peaks to be monitored, and counting the number of such peaks per cycle which exceed such threshold values to detect said breakpoint region.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of measuring at least the scattering of light caused by a perturbed stream further comprises the step of measuring the extinction of light caused by said perturbed stream.

6. The method of claim 1 comprising the additional step of selectively varying the flow rate of said flow stream at least until said breakpoint region is caused to correspond with said preselected flow stream sensing point.

The invention of claim 6 wherein said method comprises the additional step of serially monitoring a plurality of cycles of said differentiated waveform for inhibiting the step of selectively varying the flow rate of said flow stream at least until a serial plurality of said cycles do not exhibit said three, positive and negative peaks per cycle, whereupon the step of selectively varying the flow rate of said flow stream is permitted to take place.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein step (c) comprises the step of monitoring selected cycles of said differentiated waveform.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein said monitoring step comprises monitoring alternate ones of said cycles.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said method comprises the further step of precisely aligning said stream sensing point relative to a preselected portion of said breakpoint region.

11. The invention of claim 10 wherein said step of precisely aligning comprises the steps of altering the breakpoint of said stream until at least one of said peaks meets a preselected reference peak parameter.

12. The method of claim 1 comprising the additional step of selectively varying the perturbation of said flow stream at least until said breakpoint region is caused to correspond with said preselected flow stream sensing point.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of selectively varying the perturbation comprises selectively varying the frequency of said perturbation.

14. The method of claim 12 comprising the additional step of monitoring a plurality of cycles of said differentiated waveform to inhibit said selective varying of the perturbation of said flow stream at least until a plurality of such cycles do not exhibit said three peaks per cycle, whereupon said selected varying of said perturbation of said flow stream is permitted to take place.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of selectively varying the perturbation comprises selectively varying the amplitude of said perturbation.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said selective varying of said amplitude comprises sweeping said amplitude through a predetermined range at least until said breakpoint region is detected.

17. An apparatus for detecting the breakpoint of a perturbed flow stream, comprising:

(a) stream sensing means for measuring at least the scattering of light caused by said perturbed stream at a preselected flow stream sensing point therealong to produce a real time waveform proportional thereto;

(b) analysis means for differentiating said real time waveform to produce a differentiated waveform; and

(c) breakpoint location means for selectively monitoring said differentiated waveform to distinguish a waveform exhibiting substantially three, positive and negative peaks per cycle, whereby detection of said three peaks per cycle indicates that said breakpoint region of said flow stream corresponds with said flow stream sensing point.

18. The invention of claim 17 wherein said apparatus additionally comprises shift means for moving said flow stream sensing point relative to said stream to locate said breakpoint region.

19. The invention of claim 17 wherein said apparatus further comprises flow rate adjustment means for selectively varying the flow rate of said flow stream at least until said breakpoint region is caused to correspond with said flow stream sensing point.

20. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein said breakpoint location means further comprises peak identification means for distinguishing per cycle a first peak of a given polarity and two successive peaks of opposite polarity.

The invention of claim 17 wherein said breakpoint location means further comprises threshold means for establishing threshold positive and negative peak-amplitude values at preselected proportions of the expected values of the three peaks to be monitored, and counting means for counting the number of such peaks per cycle which exceeds such threshold values, to detect said breakpoint region.

22. The invention of claim 17 wherein said breakpoint location means further comprises breakpoint monitoring means for monitoring selected cycles of said differentiated waveform.

23. The invention of claim 22 wherein said breakpoint monitoring means further comprises alternate breakpoint waveform monitoring means for monitoring alternate ones of said cycles.

24. The invention of claim 17 wherein said apparatus further comprises stream sensing point alignment means for precisely aligning said stream sensing point relative to a preselected portion of said breakpoint region.

25. The invention of claim 24 wherein said breakpoint alignment means comprises servo means for altering the breakpoint of said stream until at least one of said peaks meets a preselected reference peak parameter.

26. The invention of claim 17 wherein said apparatus further comprises perturbation means for selectively varying the perturbation of said flow stream at least until said breakpoint region is caused to correspond with said preselected flow stream sensing point.

27. The invention of claim 26 wherein said perturbation means further comprises frequency adjustment means for selectively varying the frequency of said perturbation.

28. The invention of claim 26 wherein said perturbation means further comprises amplitude adjustment means for selectively varying the amplitude of said perturbation.

29. The invention of claim 28 wherein said amplitude adjustment means comprises amplitude sweep means for sweeping said amplitude through a predetermined range at least until said breakpoint region is detected.
