Abstract

Method for making a sealing device comprising a door or gasket of rigid material curved in one direction and straight in another, as in the form of a portion of a cylinder, and having convex and concave surfaces. Either or both such surfaces has a circumferentially continuous groove across the straight and curved portions that contains a molded in place packing of resilient material. The packing has a portion projecting from the groove and has a recess extending into the groove. The sides of the recess are either parallel to a transverse axis whose direction corresponds to the direction of travel of the mold members relative to each other when separating so that there are no undercuts in the packing material into which portions of the mold would project and prevent separation of the mold members after the molding operation without damaging the packing.

Claims

1. The method of making a sealing device comprising providing a rigid member having an upper surface which in a first plane of cross section through said surface is curved and which in a second plane of cross section through said surface normal to said first plane is straight, said member having a transverse axis, forming a circumferentially continuous groove in said upper surface wherein said groove comprises a first pair of spaced apart groove sections extending generally parallel to said first plane and a second pair of spaced apart groove sections extending generally parallel to the second plane and joining with said first groove sections, and thereafter placing the member between a pair of mold members, moving at least one of said mold members to a position wherein a continuous portion of said one mold member projects into said groove and molding a packing member of resilient material into said groove so that the packing member has a portion projecting from said groove upwardly of said upper surface and has a recess below said upper surface and wherein said packing member has a surface extending from said recess to said projection and wherein said packing surface in any plane transverse of the packing being in a line such that no point on said line that is upwardly of another point on said line is radially inward of said another point and separating said mold members from each other after the molding operation is complete by moving said one mold member relative to the other mold member in the direction of said axis.

2. The method of claim 1 in which a preform of partially cured resilient material is placed between the mold members and over said groove prior to said molding.

The method of claim 1 in which said molding is accomplished by injection of partially precured resilient material into said groove through one of said mold members when said mold members are in their positions for molding, curing said material within said mold members, and thereafter separating said mold members from each other in a direction corresponding to the direction of said axis whereby said one mold member is moved relative to said surface extending from said recess to said projection without interference with said packing member.
