Communication system for a multiple-computer system
First Claim
1. In a multiple-computer or distributed computing system having a plurality of computers responsive to input signals from external sources for executing a predetermined set of task to produce an output signal controlling at least one external device, wherein each computer is capable of selecting and executing a subset of said predetermined set of tasks in a coordinated manner with all of the other computers in said multiple-computer system, an inter-computer communication network for transmitting multiple bit messages identifying the tasks selected by the individual computers and multiple-bit messages containing the data resulting from the execution of the tasks selected and executed by the computers comprising:
- a plurality of transmitters, one in each computer for transmitting, in a serial format, the messages identifying the tasks selected and the messages containing the data generated by its associated computer;
a plurality of receivers in each computer, equal in number to the number of computers in the system, each receiver in each computer associated with a different computer in the system including a receiver associated with its own computer, and wherein each receiver includes means for converting the received messages from a serial format to a parallel format for utilization in the associated computer, and means for adding to each received message coded information indentifying the computer with which said receiver is associated;
a plurality of communication links, one associated with each of said computers, each of said plurality of communication links interconnecting the transmitter of the associated computer with each associated receiver in the other computers and the receiver associated with its own computer, each communication link comprising a pair of wires.

Abstract
A communication system for a multiple computer or distributed computing system is disclosed. The communication system comprises a set of individual communication links. Each computer (10a through 10n) has its own communication link (16, 18, and 20), over which it alone can transmit messages to every other computer in the system. Each computer (10a through 10n) includes a plurality of receivers, one receiver for each computer in the system. Each receiver is connected to one of the communication links, and only receives messages transmitted by the single computer which transmits messages over that communication link.

5. In a fault tolerant multiple computer system having a plurality of computers and each computer including means for checking the multiple bit messages and multiple bit data generated by the other computers, an inter-computer communication system comprising:
-
a plurality of transmitters, one in each computer and associated therewith, for sending multiple bit messages and multiple bit data generated by its own computers; a plurality of receivers in each computer, one receiver for each computer in the system and each receiver in each computer associated with a different computer in the system, including a receiver associated with its own computer, each receiver including means for adding a code to the received messages and data identifying the computer with which it is associated; and a plurality of transmission links, one associated with each computer, each transmission link interconnecting the transmitter in its associated computer with the associated receiver in each of said other computers and with the associated receiver in its own computer permitting the associated computer to receive and check the messages sent by its own transmitter over its associated transmission link.
