Abstract

A dry glass electrode for use in potentiometric analyses of aqueous media. The electrode comprises a metal conductor constituted of platinum, gold, or tantalum, a layer comprising an oxide of the metal having a thickness of between about 50 Angstrom units and about 2 microns on an outer surface of the metal conductor, and an ion-selective glass membrane over and in electrical contact with the oxide layer. The ion-selective glass has a coefficient of thermal expansion differing by less than about 25% from the coefficient of thermal expansion of the metal.

A method for producing the electrode of the invention is also disclosed.

Claims

1. A method for preparing a dry glass electrode having an ion-selective alkali metal-containing glass membrane over a surface oxidized metal conductor for use in potentiometric analyses of aqueous media comprising the steps of:

electrolytically etching a conductor constituted of a metal selected from the group consisting of platinum and gold in an alkaline solution containing cyanide ions and ions of the principal alkali metal of said glass;

oxidizing an etched surface of the conductor;

covering an etched and surface oxidized portion of the conductor with an ion-selective alkali metal containing glass;

heating the conductor and glass to a temperature sufficient to form a membrane of said glass over said portion and heat seal the glass to said oxide layer to provide an electrically conductive junction therebetween; and

annealing the glass by cooling it at a rate which substantially avoids phase separation in the glass.

A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said glass is annealed by cooling it at a rate effective to increase the breaking strength of the glass by a factor of at least two compared to unannealed glass of the same thickness as the membrane formed and to maintain the D.C. resistance of the membrane at between about 10 and about 100 MΩ

3. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein the glass is heated to a temperature sufficient to cause plastic flow but low enough to avoid loss of alkali metal oxide by evaporation from said surface oxidized portion.

4. A method as set forth in claim 3 wherein the glass is heated to a temperature between about 880°

and about 940°

C. to form said membrane and heat-seal it to said oxide layer, and is thereafter cooled at a rate of between about 10° and

about 25°

C. per minute to a temperature just above the softening point of the glass, at a rate of between about 4°

to about 6°

C. per minute from a temperature just above the softening point to a temperature just above the annealing point of the glass, and at a rate of between about 1° and

about 4°

C. per minute from a temperature just above the annealing point to the strain point of the glass.

5. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said etched surface is oxidized sufficiently to provide a layer of the oxide of said metal having a thickness of between 50 Angstrom units and about 2μ

.

6. A method as set forth in claim 5 wherein said etched surface is anodically oxidized.

7. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said etched surface of the conductor is anodized by immersing it in an acid solution and connecting it to the positive terminal of a direct current power source whose negative terminal is connected to an inert cathode also immersed in said acid, and applying a voltage of between about 1 and about 3 volts for a time sufficient to provide said oxide layer.

8. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said conductor is a length of wire that is etched and oxidized at one end thereof and said glass is sealed over said end.

9. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein said end is etched according to a schedule of amperage that results in the formation of a substantially herispherical configuration at the tip of said end.

10. A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein said wire is oriented vertically with its etched and oxidized tip uppermost when said glass is sealed over the end thereof.

11. A method as set forth in claim 10 wherein a tube of ion-selective glass is slid over the upper end of said wire conductor and supported in such position that the top of said tube extends above the top of the wire, after which the tube and wire are heated so that the glass is heat sealed over the upper end of the wire to provide an ion-selective glass membrane which covers said tip.

12. A method as set forth in claim 11 wherein the glass is heated to a temperature sufficient that plastic flow of the glass occurs under the force of gravity so that a relatively thin membrane having a thickness of less than about 15 microns is formed at said tip.

13. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein a sleeve comprising an insulating glass is initially slid over said wire conductor and supported in a position such that the end of the wire opposite said tip extends below said insulating glass sleeve and said ion-selective glass tube is thereafter placed over the upper end of said wire conductor to abut said insulating glass sleeve and be supported thereon, said insulating glass being fused to said ion-selective glass on exposure to heat and forming an insulating jacket for a portion of said wire spaced longitudinally of said tip.

A method as set forth in claim 13 wherein an assembly comprising said wire conductor said insulating glass sleeve and said ion-selective glass tube is supported in a vertical position by a holder constituted of ceramic material from which essentially no ions migrate into said insulating glass tube.

15. A method as set forth in claim 14 wherein said holder accomodates a plurality of said assemblies and said holder is placed in an oven wherein a plurality of electrodes are formed in a single heating cycle.

16. A method as set forth in claim 1 where said ion-selective glass has a coefficient of glass thermal expansion differing by less than about 25% from the coefficient of thermal expansion of said metal.
