Abstract

A method and system for scrambling a plurality of input signals for secure transmission thereof, as well as various methods and systems for television transmission, are disclosed. The disclosed scrambling technique, in one form, includes modulating an in-phase component of at least one carrier signal in response to one and then another of a plurality of input signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of the one and another of the input signals are carried by the in-phase component. A quadrature component of the at least one carrier signal is modulated in response to the one and another of the plurality of input signals in the sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of the one and another of the input signals are carried by the quadrature component and such that the in-phase and quadrature components together carry the one and another of the input signals in their entireties. The modulated in-phase and quadrature components are combined for transmission. A decoder for unscrambling the plurality of signals is also disclosed. The various television transmission methods and systems involve provision of additional audio signals, in scrambled or unscrambled form, with the normal television audio and video signals so that multi-lingual program service as well as other services can be provided.

Claims

1. A method for scrambling a plurality of input signals for secure transmission thereof comprising the steps of:

modulating an in-phase component of at least one carrier signal in response to one and then another of the plurality of input signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of said one and another of the input signals are carried by said in-phase component;

modulating a quadrature component of said at least one carrier signal in response to said one and then said another of said plurality of input signals in said sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of said one and another input signals are carried by said quadrature component and such that said in-phase and quadrature components together carry said two input signals in their entireties; and

,

combining said modulated in-phase and quadrature components for transmission.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said sequence of time intervals comprises time intervals that vary in duration in a predetermined, pseudo-random manner.

3. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein said input signals both are information signals, and one information signal is an audio program signal associated with a television video program.

4. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein at least two input signals are provided and both of said input signals are audio program signals associated with a television video program and wherein one audio program signal is in a first language and the other audio program signal is in a second language.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said one and another of said input signals vary in frequency within approximately the same frequency band and comprising the further steps of modulating a second carrier signal with the combined in-phase and quadrature components of said at least one carrier, and transmitting said modulated second carrier.

6. The method of claim 1 including the further steps of unscrambling said one and another of said input signals by:

demodulating the modulated in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier signal;

providing the parts of the demodulated in-phase component containing said one input signal as a first output signal and the parts containing said another input signal as a second output signal; and

,

providing the parts of the demodulated quadrature component containing said one input signal as said first output signal and the parts containing said another input signal as said second output signal.

7. The method of claim 1 comprising the further steps of unscrambling said one and another of said plurality of input signals in the in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier signal by:

demodulating the in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier signal;

alternately applying the demodulated in-phase component and the demodulated quadrature component of the carrier signal to an output terminal in accordance with said sequence of time intervals.

8. The method of claims 6 or 7 wherein said sequence of time intervals comprises time intervals that vary in duration in a predetermined, pseudo-random manner.

9. The method of claims 6 or 7 wherein said one and another of the input signals both are information signals, and one information signal is an audio program signal associated with a television video program.

10. The method of claims 6 or 7 wherein both said one and another of said input signals are audio program signals associated with a television video program and wherein one audio program signal is in a first language and the other audio program signal is in a second language.

11. The method of claims 6 or 7 wherein said one and another of the input signals vary in frequency within approximately the same frequency band and comprising the further steps of modulating a second carrier signal with both the modulated in-phase and quadrature components of said at least one carrier, and transmitting said modulated second carrier.

12. A method of operating a television system comprising the steps of:

transmitting a television audio program signal and a television video program signal within respective normal television audio and video signal frequency bands of an overall television frequency band allocated for transmission of a single television channel, said audio and video program signals being transmitted at respective normal audio and normal video center frequencies assigned for normal transmission of the respective audio and video signals within said normal television audio and video frequency bands;

simultaneously transmitting at least two additional user selectable audio signals within said overall television frequency band at at least one center frequency lying within the television audio frequency band, said at least one center frequency being displaced from the normal audio center frequency by an amount such that, in the transmission thereof, the two additional audio signals at said at least one center frequency do not interfere with the television audio or video program signals and do not exceed the limits of the overall television frequency band.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said two additional audio signals are transmitted at first and second center frequencies displaced from one another by an amount such that, in the transmission thereof, the two additional audio signals do not interfere with each other.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein said at least two additional audio signals are transmitted by modulating with the additional audio signals an in-phase and a quadrature component of a carrier signal having at least one center frequency.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said at least two additional audio signals are scrambled by modulating the in-phase component of the carrier signal with one of the additional audio signals while simultaneously modulating the quadrature component with the other of the additional audio signals, and periodically reversing the modulating signal so that the other of the additional audio signals modulates the in-phase component of the carrier signal and vice-versa.

16. The method of claim 12, 13, 14 or 15 including the further steps of:

receiving the normal television video signal frequency band and detecting the television video program signal;

receiving the normal television audio signal frequency band and detecting the television audio program signal and the two additional audio signals;

selecting the television audio program signal or either one of the two additional audio signals for production of sound; and

,

producing a television display in response to the detected television video program signal while simultaneously producing sound in response to the selected one of the three audio signals.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the television audio program signal is an audio information signal in one language and at least one of the additional audio signals is an audio information signal in another language, and wherein each of said audio information signals is a soundtrack associated with the television video program signal.

18. A method for transmitting television audio and video program signals comprising the steps of:

providing at least two different audio signals and at least one television video program signal, at least one of the audio signals being a television audio program signal associated with the television video program signal;

transmitting the video program signal in a first frequency band;

transmitting in a first form within a second frequency band one and then the other of the audio signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of each of the two audio signals are transmitted in the second frequency band in the first form;

transmitting within said second frequency band, in a second form distinguishable from said first form, one and then the other of the audio signals in said sequence of time intervals such that the one of the audio signals is transmitted in a time interval in the second form while the other is being transmitted in a time interval of corresponding length in the first form and vice-versa, parts of the one and the other audio signals not transmitted in the first form thereby being transmitted in the second form so that the two audio signals are transmitted in their entireties in the second frequency band but are transmitted in part in the first form and in part in the second form, both of the two audio signals being available in the transmitted signal for selection in their entireties from said first and second forms.

40. The method of claim 18 wherein said time intervals in said sequence vary in duration in a determinable manner.

41. The method of claim 18 including the steps of providing a third audio signal, and transmitting said third audio signal within said second frequency band in a third form distinguishable from said first and second forms, said third audio signal being available for selection in its entirety in said third form.

42. The method of claim 18 or 41 wherein said first and second forms comprise different subcarriers within said second frequency band.

43. The method of claim 18 or 41 wherein said first and second forms comprise respective in-phase and quadrature components of a subcarrier within said second frequency band.

44. The method of claim 18 including the further steps of transmitting data related to the sequence of time intervals, and selecting at least one of the two transmitted audio signals in its entirety for production of sound with said transmitted video program signal in response to said transmitted data.

45. The method of claim 44 wherein said time intervals in said sequence vary in duration in a pseudo-random manner and wherein said data is indicative of said pseudo-random manner.

46. The method of claim 41 including the step of selecting at least one of the first, second and third transmitted audio signals in its entirety for production of sound with said transmitted video program signal.

19. A method for operating a subscription television system comprising the steps of:

transmiting a scrambled television video signal within a first frequency band together with both an unscrambled audio signal and a plurality of scrambled audio signals within a second frequency band, the first and second frequency bands being within an overall frequency band allocated to a single television channel;

receiving the transmitted first and second frequency bands containing the scrambled video signal, the unscrambled audio signal and the plurality of scrambled audio signals;

selectively displaying a scrambled or an unscrambled television video signal in response to the received scrambled television video signal in the first frequency band;

selectively producing audio with the displayed scrambled television video signal in response to the received unscrambled audio signal in the second frequency band and producing audio with the displayed unscrambled television video signal in response to a selected one of the plurality of scrambled audio signals in the received second frequency band.

20. Apparatus for scrambling a plurality of input signals for secure transmission thereof comprising:

means for generating an in-phase and a quadrature component of at least one carrier signal;

means for modulating the in-phase component of said at least one carrier signal in response to one and then another of the plurality of input signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of said one another of the input signals are carried by said in-phase component;

means for modulating the quadrature component of said at least one carrier signal in response to said one and then said another of said plurality of input signals in said sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of said one and another input signals are carried by said quadrature component and such that said in-phase and quadrature components together carry said two input signals in their entireties; and

,

means for combining said modulated in-phase and quadrature components for transmission.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 including means for generating said sequence of time intervals such that said time intervals vary in duration in a predetermined, pseudo-random manner.

22. The apparatus of claim 20 or 21 wherein said input signals both are information signals, and one information signal is an audio program signal associated with a television video program.

23. The apparatus of claim 20 or 21 wherein both said one and said another of said input signals are audio program signals associated with a television video program and wherein one of the audio program signals is in a first language and the other of the audio program signal is in a second language.

24. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein said one and another of said input signals vary in frequency within approximately the same frequency band and further including means for modulating a second carrier signal with both the modulated in-phase and quadrature components of said at least one carrier, and means for transmitting said modulated second carrier.

25. The apparatus of claim 20 including a decoder for unscrambling said one and another of said input signals comprising:

means for demodulating the modulated in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier signal;

switching means for providing the parts of the demodulated in-phase component containing said one input signal as a first output signal and the parts containing said another input signal as a second output signal; and

,

switching means for providing the parts of the demodulated quadrature component containing said one input signal as said first output signal and the parts containing said another input signal as said second output signal.

26. The apparatus of claim 20 comprising means for unscrambling said one and another of said plurality of input signals in the in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier signal including:

means for demodulating the in-phase and quadrature components of the carrier signal; and

,

means for alternately applying the demodulated in-phase component and the demodulated quadrature component of the carrier signal to an output terminal in accordance with said sequence of time intervals.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein both said one and another of said input signals are audio program signals associated with a television video program and wherein one audio program signal is in a first language and other other audio program signal is in a second language.

28. The apparatus of claim 25, 26 or 27 including means for generating said sequence of time intervals such that said time intervals vary in duration in a predetermined, pseudo-random manner.

29. The apparatus of claim 25, 26 or 27 wherein said one and another of the input signals vary in frequency within approximately the same frequency band and further comprising means for modulating a second carrier signal with both the modulated in-phase and quadrature components of said at least one carrier, and means for transmitting said modulated second carrier.

30. In a television transmission system including means for transmitting a television audio and video program signals within respective normal television audio and video signal frequency band of an overall television frequency band allocated for transmission of a single television channel, wherein said audio and video program signal are transmitted at a normal audio and video center frequencies assigned for normal transmission of the respective audio and video signals within said normal television audio and video frequency bands, the improvement comprising means for simultaneously transmitting at least two additional user selectable audio signals within said overall television frequency band at at least one center frequency lying within said television audio frequency band, said at least one center frequency being displaced from said normal audio center frequency by an amount such that, in the transmission thereof, the two additional audio signals at said at least one center frequency do not interfere with the television audio or video program signals and do not exceed the limits of the overall television frequency band.

31. The improvement of claim 30 wherein said means for simultaneously transmitting said two additional audio signals comprises means for modulating, with the additional audio signals, an in-phase and a quadrature component of a carrier signal having said at least one center frequency.

The improvement of claim 31 wherein said means for simultaneously transmitting said two additional audio signals comprise means for modulating the in-phase component of the carrier signal with one of the additional audio signals while simultaneously modulating the quadrature component with the other of the additional audio signals, and means for periodically reversing the modulating signal so that the other of the additional audio signals modulates the in-phase component of the carrier signal and vice-versa.

33. The improvement of claim 30, 31 or 32 further including:

means for receiving the normal television video signal frequency band and detecting the television video program signal;

means for receiving the normal television audio signal frequency band and detecting the television audio program signal and the two additional audio signals;

means for selecting the television audio program signal or either one of the two additional audio signals for production of sound; and

,

means for producing a television display in response to the detected television video program signal while simultaneously producing sound in response to the selected one of the three audio signals.

34. The improvement of claim 33 wherein the television audio program signal is an audio information signal in one language and at least one of the additional audio signals is an audio information signal in another language, and wherein each of said audio information signals is a soundtrack associated with the television video program signal.

35. A television audio and video program signal transmission system comprising:

first and second sources for at least two different audio signals and a third source for at least one television video program signal, at least one of the audio signals being a television audio program signal associated with the television video program signal;

first transmitting means for transmitting the video program signal in a first frequency band;

second transmitting means for transmitting in a first form within a second frequency band one and then the other of the audio signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of each of the two audio signals are transmitted in the second frequency band in the first form, said second transmitting means including means for transmitting within said second frequency band, in a second form distinguishable from said first form, one and then the other of the audio signals in said sequence of time intervals such that the one of the audio signals is transmitted in a time interval in the second form while the other is being transmitted in a time interval of corresponding length in the first form and vice-versa, parts of the one and the other audio signals not transmitted in the first form thereby being transmitted in the second form so that the two audio signals are transmitted in their entireties in the second frequency band but are transmitted in part in the first form and in part in the second form, both of the two audio signals being available in the transmitted signal from said second transmitting means for selection in their entireties from said first and second forms.

36. The system of claim 35 wherein said second transmitting means comprises:

means for generating in-phase and quadrature components of a first carrier signal;

means for modulating said in-phase component with said one and the other of said audio signals to produce said first form; and

,

means for modulating said quadrature component with said one and the other of said audio signals to produce said second form distinguishable from said first form.

37. The system of claim 36 including:

means for combining the modulated in-phase and quadrature components of said first carrier signal; and

,

means for modulating a second carrier signal with the combined components from said combining means.

38. The system of claim 35, 36 or 37 including means for generating said sequence of time intervals such that said time intervals vary in duration in a pseudo-random manner.

39. A subscription television system comprising:

means for transmitting a scrambled television video signal within a first frequency band together with both an unscrambled audio signal and a plurality of scrambled audio signals within a second frequency band, the first and second frequency bands being within an overall frequency band allocated to a single television channel;

means for receiving the transmitted first and second frequency bands containing the scrambled video signal, the unscrambled audio signal and the plurality of scrambled audio signals;

means for selectively displaying a scrambled or an unscrambled television video signal in response to the received scrambled television video signal in the first frequency band; and

,

means for selectively producing audio with the displayed scrambled television video signal in response to the received unscrambled audio signal in the second frequency band and producing audio with the displayed unscrambled television video signal in response to a selected one of the plurality of scrambled audio signals in the received second frequency band.

47. A method of operating a television system comprising the steps of:

transmitting from a first location, a television audio and video program signal and at least two additional audio program signals associated with the television video signal so that the television video signal is transmitted with at least three associated audio program signals each containing information relating to the video content of the video signal, the television audio and video program signal and the at least two additional audio program signals being transmitted within a frequency band allocated to a single television channel each in a form distinguishable from the others;

receiving at a location remote from the one location, the transmitted television audio and video program signals and the at least two additional audio program signals and selecting at least one of the three audio program signals for production of sound with the video signal.

48. The method of claim 47 wherein the at least two additional audio program signals are scrambled by:

transmitting in a first form one and then another of the at least two additional audio program signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of the at least two additional audio program signals are transmitted in the first form; and

transmitting in a second form distinguishable from the first form one and then another of the at least two additional audio signals in said sequence of time intervals such that the one of the at least two additional audio signals is transmitted in a time interval in the second form while another of the at least two additional audio signals is being transmitted in a time interval of corresponding length in the first form and vice-versa, parts of the one and another of the at least two additional audio signals not transmitted in the first form thereby being transmitted in the second form so that the at least two additional audio signals are transmitted in their entireties but not in one form.

49. The method of claim 48 wherein said first and second forms are, respectively, an in-phase component and a quadrature component of a carrier signal.

50. A television system comprising:

means at a first location for transmitting a television audio and video program signal and at least two additional audio program signals associated with the television video signal such that the television video signal is transmitted with at least three associated audio program signals each containing information relating to the video content of the video signal, said transmitting means transmitting the television audio and video program signal and the at least two additional audio program signals within a frequency band allocated to a single television channel each in a form distinguishable from the other; and

,

means at a location remote from the first location for receiving the television audio and video program signal and the at least two additional audio program signals transmitted from the first location and selecting at least one of the three audio program signals for production of sound with the video signal.

51. The television system of claim 50 wherein said transmitting means includes means for scrambling the at least two additional audio program signals.

52. The television system of claim 51 wherein said scrambling means comprises:

means for transmitting in a first form one and then another of the at least two additional audio program signals in a sequence of time intervals such that parts but not all of the at least two additional audio program signals are transmitted in the first form; and

,

means for transmitting in a second form distinguishable from the first form one and then another of the at least two additional audio signals in said sequence of time intervals such that the one of the at least two additional audio signals is transmitted in a time interval in the second form while another of the at least two additional audio signals is being transmitted in a time interval of corresponding length in the first form and vice-versa, parts of the one and another of the at least two additional audio signals not transmitted in the first form thereby being transmitted in the second form so that the at least two additional audio signals are transmitted in their entireties but not in one form.

53. The television system of claim 51 wherein said scrambling means comprises:

means for generating first and second carrier signals;

means for modulating the first and second carrier signals each with parts but not all of one of the at least two additional audio program signals and each with parts but not all of another of the at least two additional audio program signals such that a each one of the two carrier signals carrier parts but not all of the at least two additional audio program signals and the two carrier signals together carry the at least two additional audio program signals in their entireties.

54. The television system of claim 53 wherein said first and second carrier signals are respective in-phase and quadrature components of a single carrier signal.

55. A method for transmitting and receiving information in a television system comprising the steps of:

providing a television video program signal, a television audio program signal and a plurality of information signals, the information signals each being limited in frequency to a predetermined audio frequency range;

generating a plurality of distinctive carrier signals within a predetermined frequency band allocated for transmission of audio to a single television channel;

modulating a first one of the plurality of carrier signals with at least one of the plurality of information signals;

modulating a second of the plurality of carrier signals with at least another of the plurality of information signals;

combining the audio program signal and the modulated first and second carrier signals to form a composite baseband audio signal;

transmitting the video program signal and the composite baseband audio signal at carrier frequencies within respective video and audio frequency bands allocated to a single television channel for transmission of video and audio;

detecting the composite baseband audio signal in the transmitted signal; and

selecting any of the audio program signal and the plurality of information signals from the detected composite baseband audio signal as a useable output signal.

56. The method of claim 55 wherein the first and second carrier signals are in-phase and quadrature components, respectively, of a single carrier wave.

57. The method of claim 55 wherein the first and second carrier signals are distinct signals displaced in frequency from the audio program signal and each other, within the composite audio baseband, by an amount at least greater than said predetermined audio frequency range.

58. The method of claim 55, 56 or 57 including the steps of encoding the plurality of information signals prior to modulating the carrier signals therewith, and decoding the encoded information signals detected in the composite baseband audio signal prior to the step of selecting.

61. The apparatus of claim 55 wherein the first and second carrier signals are distinct signals displaced in frequency from the audio program signal and each other, within the composite audio baseband, by an amount at least greater than said predetermined audio frequency range.

59. Apparatus for transmitting and receiving information in a television system comprising:

means for providing a television video program signal, a television audio program signal and a plurality of information signals, the information signals each being limited in frequency to a predetermined audio frequency range;

means for generating a plurality of distinctive carrier signals within a predetermined frequency band allocated for transmission of audio to a single television channel;

means for modulating a first and a second of the plurality of carrier signals with at least one and another, respectively, of the plurality of information signals;

means for combining the audio program signal and the modulated first and second carrier signals to form a composite baseband audio signal;

means for transmitting the video program signal and the composite baseband audio signal at carrier frequencies within respective video and audio frequency bands allocated to a single televison channel for transmission of video and audio; and

means remote from the transmitting means for detecting the composite baseband audio signal in the transmitted signal and selecting any of the audio program signal and the plurality of information signals from the detected composite baseband audio signal as a useable output signal.

60. The apparatus of claim 59 wherein the first and second carrier signals are in-phase and quadrature components, respectively, of a single carrier wave.

62. The apparatus of claim 59, 60 or 61 including means for encoding the plurality of information signals prior to modulating the carrier signals therewith, and wherein said means including means for decoding the encoded information signals detected in the composite baseband audio signal prior to selecting said any of the audio program signal and the plurality of information signals.
