1. A method of monitoring the performance of a steam power plant through calculation of performance comprising:

  • detecting data including feedwater flow rate, steam pressure, steam temperature and load level which are representative of the states of operation of various parts of the plant, monitoring the fluctuation of said load level to detect the duration of any steady states of the load level, determining when the rate of fluctuation of the load level falls below a predetermined value to a steady state for at least a predetermined time length, whereby said data are judged to be valid and calculating the performance of said power plant as a function of the valid data by calculating at least one heat rate function.
