1. A microprocessor based single loop control instrument comprising:

  • a first microprocessor,a read only memory in which is stored an operating program for said first microprocessor, said program containing machine instructions sufficient to perform a single loop control PID algorithm using the tuning parameters KP, KI and KD which produces an output signal in response to at least a process variable and a setpoint and sufficient to operate said control instrument as one of at least two different types of controllers each having at least two operating modes,a random access memory,means for entering into said random access memory at least two sets of said tuning parameters and at least one breakpoint,means for selecting a tuning parameter from one set of tuning parameters or the other in accordance with whether a tuning variable is greater or lesser than said breakpoint,means for causing said control instrument to operate as one of the controller types provided for by the program stored in said read only memory, andmeans for selecting the mode of operation of the controller selected by said causing means.
