1. An apparatus for collecting a volume of saliva as a specimen from a test subject, comprising,(a) a collection vial for receiving saliva, said vial having an aperture at one end and a filter disposed across said aperture;
- (b) a hollow cylindrical barrel having first and second ends, the first end of said barrel being connected to said vial in a manner such that the filter covers the opening of said first end of said barrel;
(c) a piston telescopically inserted into the second end of said barrel;
(d) a storage space in said piston, said space having a mass of saliva-absorptive material disposed therein; and
(e) a removable cap connected to said piston for enclosing said space.

A method and apparatus for collecting saliva from a test subject comprises providing a flavored absorbent mass, such as a sponge, for mastication and charging with saliva and then expressing the saliva from the mass. Apparatus for this method comprises a barrel-piston arrangement in association with a specimen vial for storage until diagnostic testing.
