1. A process for preparing a compound of the formulawherein R2 and R3 are hydrogen, alkyl of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, inclusive, and phenyl;

  • R4 is selected from the group consisting of SO2 R2, SO2 CH2 COphenyl, CO2 CH2 Z where Z is selected from the group consisting of CH2 I, CCl3, CH2 SO2 R2, phenyl, and fluorenylmethyl, which comprises reacting a compound of the formula ##STR3## wherein R2, R3, and R4, are as defined above, and X is selected from the group consisting of OSO2 R2, Cl, Br, and I, with triphenylphosphine/carbon tetrahalide, concentrating the reaction mixture in vacuo to a concentrate and applying said concentrate to a thick-layer silica gel plate to give the desired compound.
