Plethysmographic acceleration pulse wave meter
First Claim
1. A plethysmograph comprising a sensor for detecting an increase or decrease in the blood volume of a vascular bed, means producing a pulse waveform signal representative of blood volume, means twice differentiating said pulse waveform signal, means producing an output signal representative of an acceleration pulse wave from said differentiated waveform signal, and means displaying said output signal for analysis of the circulatory system.

Abstract
A plethysmograph is provided with a sensor for detecting an increase or decrease in the blood volume of a vascular bed, preferably by photoelectrically detecting blood content in a finger-apex position. The detection signals derived from the sensor are twice or triply differentiated to produce an acceleration curve indicative of blood circulation whose interpretation effectively leads to a diagnosis of the entire circulatory system including early signs of malfunction. Detection of the presymptoms of arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction, cerebral apoplexy, subarachnoidal hemorrhage, etc. is possible and the apparatus may be used to monitor the patient'"'"'s condition during subsequent treatment. A visual or printed card of the diagnostic results can be provided.
