An internal combustion engine for a vehicle, which comprises a plurality of independent engine units including a primary engine unit and an auxiliary engine unit, and an output shaft, characterized in that the primary engine is connected to the output shaft and the auxiliary engine unit is connected to the output shaft through a clutch, that a control system is provided with means for detecting phase difference between both engine units and for engaging the clutch at a proper phase difference.
