1. An autofocus camera of the type employing interchangeable lens assemblies, comprising:
- a camera bodyan adjustable focus lens assembly including a lens having a particular optical field of view and means for detachably mounting said lens assembly on said camera body;
a rangefinder for deriving a signal representative of subject distance, said rangefinder including a capacitance-type sonic transducer, that includes a backplate member, for transmitting sonic energy toward a distant subject and for receiving a reflection of said energy from said subject;
drive means coupled to said adjustable focus lens assembly and responsive to said rangefinder derived signal-for adjusting said lens to a focus position that will cause said lens assembly to form an in-focus image of a subject, located at a distance determined by said rangefinder, at the camera focal plane; and
means for changing the effective size of a surface of said backplate member to thereby change the sonic beam angle of said transducer such that the magnitude of said beam angle is correlated to the optical field of view angle of an attached adjustable-focus lens.

Abstract
A photographic camera having a plurality of interchangeable, adjustable focus lenses and having a focus control system capable of focusing each such lens over a range of subject distances in response to a rangefinder derived signal is provided with a sonic ranging system that includes an ultrasonic, capacitance-type transducer having a multiple segment backplate whose sonic beam angle is automatically correlated to the field-of-view angle of the image forming lens by selecting a particular combination of backplate segments when or as a particular interchangeable lens is attached to the camera body.

11. An autofocus camera of the type alternatively employing interchangeable lens assemblies, each having a particular optical field of view, said camera comprising:
-
a camera body having means for alternatively detachably mounting each of said lens assemblies thereon; a rangefinder for deriving a signal representative of subject distance, said rangefinder including a sonic transducer having a backplate member, for transmitting sonic energy toward a distant subject; drive means operative for adjusting the mounted lens assembly to a selected focus position responsive to said signal; and means for changing the effective diameter of said backplate member to thereby change the conical sonic beam angle of said transducer in correlation with the optical field of view of the mounted lens assembly. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13)
