Abstract

This Earth Photo Globe is characterized in that LANDSAT or other remote sensing geographical indicia is reproduced on the globe sphere with a definition smaller than that resolvable by the unaided human eye. An optical magnifier is mounted above the globe sphere to enable resolution of the full globe definition. A "cloud cover" spherical overlay may surround the sphere and contain a representation of the earth'"'"'s cloud cover. The magnifier may be supported by this overlay.

Various systems are disclosed for making the Earth Photo Globe. One uses a laser beam that is raster scanned across a photosensitized sphere, and is modulated by LANDSAT pixel data. In another system the LANDSAT data is used to prepare a set of photographic negative images each covering a section of the globe, and each containing alignment and positioning information. These images are projected onto a photosensitized sphere to make the globe.

Several globe-illumination systems are also disclosed, including a diurnal interior lighting assembly and a surface lighting scheme for displaying geopolitical data.

Claims

1. A globe and support assembly therefor, comprising:

an arcuate support arm extending through at least 180°

,

a base for said support arm,

a fixed mount situated on said support arm near one end thereof,

an adjustable mount situated on said support arm diametrically opposite said fixed mount and comprising a mounting bracket threadingly connected to said support arm and thereby threadingly moveable toward or away from said fixed mount,

said fixed and adjustable mounts each being independent from said globe and each having a globe engaging surface adapted respectively for clamping against the undisturbed outer surface of said globe, said globe being disposable within the arc of said support arm so that movement of said adjustable mount toward said fixed mount will clamp said globe between the globe engaging surfaces of said fixed and adjustable mounts, said globe being disposable at any orientation within said support assembly so that said mounts will clamp the outer surface of said globe either at the poles thereof or at any other set of diametrically opposite points.

2. A globe and support assembly according to claim 1 wherein said fixed and adjustable mounts each are swivelly connected to said support arm along a common swivel axis, whereby a globe clamped between said mounts can swivel about said same common swivel axis.

A globe and support assembly according to claim 1 wherein said globe includes means for illuminating at least a portion of the surface thereof, together with a switch for said illumination means mounted on the surface of said globe, one of said mounts having an opening therethrough and being positionable over said switch to permit operation of said switch by a finger inserted through said opening.

A globe support assembly according to claim 3 wherein said illuminating means comprises one of a diurnal projection lamp swivelly mounted at the center of said globe or a plurality of individual light sources disposed on the surface of said globe in a pattern corresponding to geopolitical or other features thereof.

A globe and support assembly according to claim 3 wherein said globe is surrounded by a generally spherical, semi-rigid overlay containing a representation of the cloud cover or other information related to the planetary or celestial body represented on said globe, said overly being moveable with respect to said globe, said overlay being situated between said globe and the globe engaging surfaces of said mounts so that by moving said moveable mount away from said fixed mount to unclamp said globe, said overlay can be rotated with respect to said globe and the moveable mount then moved toward said fixed mount to reclamp the globe with the overlay in a new position with respect to the globe, said opening still being situated over said switch, so that said switch can be operated by placing a finger through said opening and depressing said semi-rigid overlay against said switch.

A globe support assembly according to claim 1 wherein the radially outward side of said support arm is toothed, together with a support stand having a correspondingly toothed arcuate upper portion which matingly receives said support arm toothed side so as to hold said support assembly and globe at an angle that is adjustable by selection of which teeth on said support arm engage which teeth on said stand.

7. An interior illuminating system for a hollow translucent globe, comprising:

a shaft extending radially inwardly from the surface of said globe,

a lighting element mounted at the end of said shaft near the center of said globe, said lighting element illuminating only a portion of the surface of said globe, said lighting element being pivotally mounted to said shaft and being weighted so that as said shaft is rotated either alone or together with said globe, the weighted portion of said lighting element will remain downward, thereby altering the illuminated portion of the globe, and

illumination selection means, coupled to said shaft on said element, for selectively altering said illuminated globe portion.

A globe illuminating system according to claim 7 wherein said illumination selection means comprises a bearing attached to said globe surface, said shaft being journaled to said bearing so as to permit rotation of said shaft about its axis, with concomitant change in which portion of said globe is illuminated.

9. A globe illuminating system according to claim 7 wherein said illumination selection means includes;

a pivot mount for said lighting element, said pivot mount being attached to the end of said shaft and including an arcuate member encompassing at least a portion of said lighting element, said lighting element having a pair of diametrically opposite coaxial members which pivotably connect to said arcuate member,

said lighting element having a relatively heavy weighted side and a relatively lighter side, so that upon movement of said pivot mount said relatively heavy side will remain downward, thereby altering the illuminated portion of the globe.

10. A globe illuminating system according to claim 9 wherein said arcuate member includes solenoid means for selectively locking at least one of said coaxial members to said arcuate member so as to prevent relative movement of said lighting element and said pivot mount.

A globe illuminating system according to claim 10 wherein said shaft is pivotably mounted to said globe so as to permit rotation of said shaft about its own axis, together with switch means, accessible exteriorly of said globe, for selectively energizing said lighting element alone or together with actuation of said solenoid means.
