Abstract

A method for in situ recalibration of a polarographic type electrochemical measuring system having a fourth electrode which includes adjusting the sensitivity of the system so that the measured value of a standard sample is correct and then measuring the transient response of the cell under those known sample conditions. A measurement of the transient response is then made for recalibration under unknown sample conditions with a readjustment of the sensitivity of the system in accordance with the change in the value of the transient response.

Claims

1. A method for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of an electrochemically active species in a fluid by measuring the electrode current from a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:

adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of said species corresponds to that of a known sample being measured;

measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample conditions in response to the injection of current into said fourth electrode; and

readjusting the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with changed in the value of said transient response between said certain time and sdid subsequent time.

2. The method of claim 1 in which the step of measuring the transient response includes the step of:

measuring the change in said cell current over a fixed period during the response of said current to said transient.

3. The method of claim 1 or 2 in which said transient is a step change in the current into the fourth electrode.

4. The method of claim 3 in which the sensitivity is reajusted in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said certain time to that at said subsequent time.

5. A method for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of oxygen in a fluid by measuring the cell current in a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:

adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of oxygen corresponds to that of a known sample being measured;

measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample conditions, said measurement of the transient response including the steps of;

injecting a transient in the current flow into said fourth electrode; and

measuring the change in the cell current over a fixed period during the response of said cell current to said transient; and

readjusting the sensitivity of said system at each of said subsequent times in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said certain time to the transient response at said subsequent times.

Apparatus for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of an electrochemically active species in a fluid by measuring the electrode current from a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising:

means for adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of said species corresponds to that of a known sample being measured;

means for measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample condition in response to the injection of current into said fourth electrode; and

means operable to readjust the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with changes in the value of said transient response between said certain time and said subsequent time.

Apparatus for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of an electrochemically active species in a fluid by measuring the cell current in a Ross type Electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising:

means for adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of said species corresponds to that of a known sample being measured;

means for measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample conditions, said means for measuring including;

means for injecting a transient in the current flow into said fourth electrode; and

means for measuring the change in said cell current over a fixed period during the response of said current to said transient; and

means operable to readjust the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said certain time to the transient response at said subsequent time.

8. A method for in situ determination of the sensitivity of a polarographic electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrode, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:

determining the sensitivity, S₁, of said cell under an initial set of ambient conditions with a know sample;

determining under said initial conditions a value, Δ

₁, for the transient response of the cell to the injection of a current pulse into said fourth electrode;

determining a transient response, Δ

₂, to a similar current injection into said fourth electrode under unknown sample conditions at a subsequent time; and

determining the cell sensitivity, S₂, at said subsequent time by modifying the initial sensitivity, S₁, in accordance with the change in the value of said transient response between said initial determination and said subsequent determination.

9. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein each of said transient responses, Δ

₁, and Δ

₂, are dtermined by the step of;

determining said transient response as the change in the current over a fixed period of time from said measuring electrodes resulting from said current injection.

10. The method of claim 9 in which the determination of cell sensitivity, S₂, is in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said initial determination to the transient response at its subsequent determination.

11. The method as set forth in claim 10 which includes the following steps:

measuring the temperature, T₁, of said cell under said initial conditions;

measuring the temperature, T₂, of said cell under said unknown sample conditions at said subsequent time; and

determining the sensitivity of said cell at said subsequent time in accordance with the equation ##EQU2## where B₁ =cathode current temperature coefficient

A method for in situ recalibration of a measuring system which includes a polarographic type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode along with an instrument for measuring the current from the cell, the gain of the instrument being adjusted during initial calibration with said cell immersed in a standard sample, comprising the steps of:

determining at the time of initial calibration and each recalibration the response of the cell to a change in the current supplied to the fourth electrode; and

modifying the gain of the instrument at each recalibration in accordance with the change since the previous calibration in the cell'"'"'s response to said current change.

13. A method for correcting for cell drift in a system for measuring the concentration of an electrochemically active species in a fluid by measuring the electrode current from a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:

measuring the transient response of said cell at a certain time and at a subsequent time in response to the injection of current into said fourth electrode; and

adjusting the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with changes in the value of said tramsient response between said certain time and said subsequent time.

14. The method of claim 13 in which the adjustment of the sensitivity is in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said certain time to the transient response at said subsequent time.

15. A method for in situ determination of cell drift between a certain time and a subsequent time in a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the step of:

measuring the transient response of said cell at said certain and said subsequent time in response to the injection of current into said fourth electrode; and

automatically calculating the drift as a function of the change in the value of said transient response between said certain time and said subsequent time.

16. The method of claim 15 in which said function is the ratio of the transient response at said certain time to the transient response at said subsequent time.

17. The method of claim 15 in which said function is the difference between the transient response at said certain time and the transient response at said subsequent time.
