1. A method for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of an electrochemically active species in a fluid by measuring the electrode current from a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:
- adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of said species corresponds to that of a known sample being measured;
measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample conditions in response to the injection of current into said fourth electrode; and
readjusting the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with changed in the value of said transient response between said certain time and sdid subsequent time.

Abstract
A method for in situ recalibration of a polarographic type electrochemical measuring system having a fourth electrode which includes adjusting the sensitivity of the system so that the measured value of a standard sample is correct and then measuring the transient response of the cell under those known sample conditions. A measurement of the transient response is then made for recalibration under unknown sample conditions with a readjustment of the sensitivity of the system in accordance with the change in the value of the transient response.

5. A method for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of oxygen in a fluid by measuring the cell current in a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:

adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of oxygen corresponds to that of a known sample being measured; measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample conditions, said measurement of the transient response including the steps of; injecting a transient in the current flow into said fourth electrode; and measuring the change in the cell current over a fixed period during the response of said cell current to said transient; and readjusting the sensitivity of said system at each of said subsequent times in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said certain time to the transient response at said subsequent times.

Apparatus for in situ recalibration of a system for measuring the concentration of an electrochemically active species in a fluid by measuring the electrode current from a Ross type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising:

means for adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of said species corresponds to that of a known sample being measured; means for measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample condition in response to the injection of current into said fourth electrode; and means operable to readjust the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with changes in the value of said transient response between said certain time and said subsequent time.

means for adjusting the sensitivity of said system at a certain time so that the measured value of said species corresponds to that of a known sample being measured; means for measuring the transient response of said cell under said known sample conditions and at a subsequent time under unknown sample conditions, said means for measuring including; means for injecting a transient in the current flow into said fourth electrode; and means for measuring the change in said cell current over a fixed period during the response of said current to said transient; and means operable to readjust the sensitivity of said system at said subsequent time in accordance with the ratio of the value of said transient response at said certain time to the transient response at said subsequent time.

8. A method for in situ determination of the sensitivity of a polarographic electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrode, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode, comprising the steps of:

determining the sensitivity, S1, of said cell under an initial set of ambient conditions with a know sample; determining under said initial conditions a value, Δ
1, for the transient response of the cell to the injection of a current pulse into said fourth electrode;determining a transient response, Δ

A method for in situ recalibration of a measuring system which includes a polarographic type electrochemical cell having anodic and cathodic measuring electrodes, a reference electrode, and a fourth electrode along with an instrument for measuring the current from the cell, the gain of the instrument being adjusted during initial calibration with said cell immersed in a standard sample, comprising the steps of:
