1. An approved lubricating oil composition comprising a lubricating oil and a material consisting essentially of the reaction product of:

  • (a) a phenolic compound comprising an alkyl-substituted phenol with the alkyl side chain having at least nine carbon atoms;

    (b) a molybdenum compound;

    (c) an amine compound comprising a mono- or polyamine having at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon based radical or an aromatic or aliphatic-substituted aromatic radical; and

    (d) sulfur or a sulfur-yielding compound, said sulfur and said maine compound being present in amounts that will provide a sulfur/amine molar ratio that is within the range of 1;

    1 to 60;

    1, said reaction product being prepared by adding the reactants in any order at room temperature to form a reaction mixture, heating subsequently said mixture to an elevated temperature and holding said mixture at said elevated temperature for a period of time, said temperature and said time being sufficient to cause the formation of said reaction product.
