A coating type insoluble lead dioxide anode comprising a porous metal substrate consisting of titanium, zirconium or an alloy thereof with a plurality of pores, each having an opening or openings on the surface of the substrate, said substrate having directly coated thereon an intermediate coating layer composed mainly of a platinum group metal or an oxide thereof and an electrode layer of a lead dioxide, at least both the outer surface of the substrate and the peripheral edges of the openings of pores in the substrate being coated with the electrode layer through the intermediate layer.
