Abstract

A method of thermal protection of a membrane-enclosed amperometric cell of the type comprising an electrolyte within an electrolyte space containing electrodes and enclosed by a semipermeable membrane which defines a sensor face; heat exchange within said cell is effected for controlled heat compensation of the electrolyte when the sensor face is exposed to temperatures outside of the operative temperature range of the cell.

A membrane-enclosed amperometric probe having an elongated body provided with a sensor face at one end of the body and with electrical electrode connections extending through the probe body; the body includes at least two elongated fluid-passing channels formed between a pair of coaxially arranged interfitting tubular members that extend in axial direction through the body from a first region near the one body end to a second region near the other body end; the channels have mutually communicating ends in the first region and separate fluid-feeding ends in the second region so as to permit passing a fluid through the probe body.

Claims

1. In a membrane-enclosed amperometric probe comprising an elongated and generally cylindrical body having a sensor face at one end of said body;

an electrolyte space covered by said membrane and in contact with at least two electrodes; and

electrical connecting means extending from said electrodes through said body to a region near the other end of said body;

the improvement consisting essentially of said body comprising at least two elongated fluid-passing channels formed between coaxially arranged interfitting tubular members extending in axial direction through said body from a first region near said one end of said body to a second region near said other end of said body;

said channels having mutually communicating ends in said first region and separate fluid-feeding ends in said second region.

2. The probe of claim 1, wherein said channels are formed by grooves at the interface between a pair of said interfitting tubular members.

3. The probe of claim 2, wherein said pair of interfitting tubular members comprises an outer tube made of a heat conducting material and an inner tube made of a thermally insulating material.

4. The probe of claim 3, wherein said inner tube is made of an organic polymer.

5. The probe of claim 2, wherein said grooves are provided at the outer surface of the inner tubular member of said pair.

6. The probe of claim 1, wherein said mutually communicating ends of said channels open into a confined annular channel or chamber extending around the longitudinal axis of said cylindrical body.

7. The probe of claim 6, wherein said confined annular channel contacts a heat conducting member that is in contact with said electrolyte space.

8. The probe of claim 7, wherein said heat conducting member is one of said electrodes.

The probe of claim 8, wherein said one electrode is the outermost electrode of a substantially coaxial electrode arrangement comprising a central electrode and at least one peripheral electrode around said central electrode with an electrical insulation means between any two adjacent electrodes.

10. The probe of claim 9, wherein said coaxial electrode arrangement additionally comprises a guard electrode between said central electrode and said peripheral electrode.

11. The probe of claim 1, wherein said body has an outer tubular jacket and wherein a thermal insulation means is provided between said jacket and said interfitting tubular members.

12. In a membrane-enclosed amperometric probe comprising an elongated generally cylindrical body having a frontal sensor face at one end of said body;

and electrolyte space covered by said membrane and in contact with at least two electrodes; and

electrical connecting means extending from said electrodes through said body to a region near the other end of said body;

the improvement consisting of said body including a thermal shield arranged within a jacket and including a heat conducting tubular member which extends through said body in an axial direction from a first region near said one end of said body to a second region thereof near said other end;

said tubular member having a surface in contact with a channel for passing a heat exchange fluid through said body, said channel not being in fluid communication with said electrolyte space.

13. The probe of claim 12, wherein a thermal insulation is provided between the inner surface of said jacket and the outer surface of said tubular member.

14. The probe of claim 13, wherein said thermal insulation includes an air gap between said jacket and said tubular member.

In a heat-sterilizable oxygen probe comprising a membrane-enclosed amperometric cell having a sensor face at a frontal portion of an elongated body provided with a cylindrical jacket adjacent said sensor face and with means for maintaining said sensor face and a portion, at least, of said jacket immersed in a biodegradeable medium;

the improvement consisting essentially of said elongated body including within said cylindrical jacket a pair of coaxially arranged interfitting tubular members defining at their interface a channel means for passing a cooling fluid from an external source through said probe and through a portion thereof near said sensor face when said probe is subjected to heat-sterilizing conditions.
