1. A method for the production of coke having a decreased sulfur content, which comprises:
- adding sodium hydroxide to a sulfur-containing bitumen in an amount of about 0.3 to about 0.8 wt.% NaOH based on bitumen, coking the bitumen after addition of said sodium hydroxide to form a sulfur-containing coke, andhydrodesulfurizing said coke using a flowing hydrogen stream, said sodium hydroxide being effective to result in removal of at least a major proportion of the sulphur contained in said coke during said hydrodesulfurizing step.
