Vehicle locating system
First Claim
1. Apparatus for providing a location-identifying signal to a vehicle, comprising:
- means for generating a carrier signal modulated in accordance with said location-identifying signal; and

Abstract
Location-representative signals are communicated to vehicles (12, 14, 16) by modifying existing traffic detector stations of the type utilizing an inductive coil (20) embedded in the roadway (22). Circuitry (44-52) is provided for generating a carrier signal modulated in accordance with a modulating signal representative of the location of an associated traffic detector station. A transformer (56) couples the modulated carrier signal into the existing inductive coil such that the coil establishes a magnetic field above the roadway which is modulated by the location representative signals. The vehicles have inductive coils (70) mounted thereon for sensing the modulated magnetic fields, and circuitry (72, 74, 76) for extracting the location-representative signals therefrom. The location-representative signals may then be, e.g., automatically transmitted to a central dispatching station (18).

6. A method of providing a location identification to a vehicle utilizing a pre-existing system which includes an inductive coil embedded in the roadway and a circuit for applying a first signal to said coil for purposes unrelated to providing location information to vehicles, said method comprising the steps of:
-
generating a signal representative of said location identification; and applying said location-identifying signal to said existing inductive coil originally embedded in a roadway for purposes other than communication of information to the vehicle, whereby said existing inductive coil creates a magnetic field above said roadway for interception by said vehicle, where the magnetic field includes not only a component produced by said first signal but also a component modulated with said location-identifying signal. - View Dependent Claims (7)

8. Apparatus for use in connection with an existing inductive coil originally embedded in the roadway for a purpose unrelated to providing motor vehicles with location information, said coil being connected to a circuit which applies a first signal thereto in pursuance of said purpose, comprising:
-
means for generating a signal uniquely representative of the specific geographic location of an associated inductive coil, and means adapted to be coupled to said inductive coil for effectively applying said signal thereacross, said signal thereby adding to said first signal applied to said coil by said circuit, whereby said inductive coil then creates a magnetic field above said roadway including a component which is modulated in accordance with said location-representative signal, in addition to the field component produced in response to said first signal.

9. A method of communicating location information to a vehicle, comprising the steps of
generating a signal representative of a location at which an inductive coil is embedded in a roadway as part of a traffic detection system; -
applying said signal to the inductive coil embedded in the roadway at said location whereby a modulated magnetic field is established above said roadway at said location; sensing magnetic fields at said vehicle whereby said magnetic field established at said location is sensed when said vehicle is at said location; and deriving said location information from said sensed magnetic field.

10. A system for keeping track, from a central station, of the specific geographic locations of the individual vehicles of a fleet of vehicles, comprising:
-
a plurality of location-identifying means, each associated with a pre-existing inductive coil originally embedded in the roadway for a purpose unrelated to fleet vehicle locating, each coil being connected to a pre-existing circuit which applies a first signal to said coil, each location-identifying means including first means for providing an electrical signal uniquely indicating the specific geographic location of the associated inductive coil, and second means for applying said signal to said coil without interfering with said first signal applied to said associated coil correlative to said purpose unrelated to fleet vehicle locating, and receiving means adapted to be mounted on each said fleet vehicle, said receiving means including magnetic field sensitive means adapted to be mounted on said fleet vehicle for sensing magnetic fields generated over said roadway by said inductive coils and for providing output signals corresponding to said location-identifying signals, and means for communicating said location-identifying signals from said vehicle to said central station.
